Deregistration at the Appenzell Ausserrhoden road traffic office in Trogen

The responsible office is the road traffic office of Appenzell Ausserrhoden (Strassenverkehrsamt). Its administration and customer counter are on the Landsgemeindeplatz in Trogen, and inspections take place at the Bühler and Grub AR inspection centers; the office sends an invitation to the periodic inspection in good time. When you sell your car, the vehicle registration document is canceled: free of charge at the counter, where you get the canceled document back right away, or by mail with a note stating from when the cancellation should apply. The canceled document then goes to the new registered keeper.

If the plates don’t go on another vehicle within 14 days, they must be deposited: at the counter, in the office’s plate drop box or by mail. Deposited plates stay reserved for you for twelve months, and from the day after they are deposited, the liability insurance is suspended.

In Ausserrhoden, the motor vehicle tax is based on the number of days the car is registered and on the gross weight shown in field 33 of your vehicle registration document. Once the plates are deposited, it no longer applies, and anything already paid is refunded from that date. We take care of all this once the car belongs to us, so you don’t have to go to Trogen.

Questions about selling your car in Ausserrhoden

Do I have to go to the road traffic office in Trogen myself?

No. The road traffic office of Appenzell Ausserrhoden does have its customer counter in Trogen, but you save yourself the trip there. After the handover, we have the vehicle registration document canceled and deposit the plates, unless you need them for another car. Once the plates are deposited, your liability insurance is suspended from the following day, and we then send you a confirmation.

What happens to the Ausserrhoden motor vehicle tax?

You get back the share from the day the plates are deposited. Because the tax is calculated on days of registration and gross weight, the office settles the account exactly once the plates have been deposited. It offsets the credit against the next charge; if you’d rather have the money paid out, it transfers the amount to your bank or postal account. Very small amounts under 10 francs are neither refunded nor charged.

Can I keep my AR number if I buy another car later?

Yes. If you want to use the plates on another vehicle within 14 days, tell us before the handover. Otherwise, we deposit them at the road traffic office in Trogen, where they stay reserved for you for twelve months. If your next car is registered during this time, it can carry your previous number again.

Should I sell the winter wheels with the car?

Yes, ideally you should. In the hilly Appenzellerland, a second set of wheels is often a real selling point for prospective buyers, and it is reflected in our offer. Note in the form whether the tires are mounted on rims and how much tread they have left, and include them at the handover. If you’ve already sold them separately, we’ll simply value the car without them.

Are high mileage or signs of wear a problem?

My car is due for inspection in Bühler or Grub soon. Should I still take it there first?

That’s not necessary. The canton’s passenger cars are inspected at the Bühler and Grub AR inspection centers, and the office sends an invitation in good time. If you sell to us before then, you no longer need this inspection: we also buy cars that are due for inspection and take their condition into account in the offer. That way, you don’t put any more money into repairs that may not pay off.
