Valais is bilingual: German is spoken in Upper Valais, French in Central and Lower Valais. Accordingly, the road traffic office also has two names, Dienststelle für Strassenverkehr und Schifffahrt (DSUS) and Service de la circulation routière et de la navigation (SCN). If you want to sell your car in Valais, you also have to deal with a special geography: the A9 serves the Rhone valley, and then there are side valleys, passes, car trains and, with Zermatt, even a car-free resort.
For you, this means: you neither have to receive prospective buyers from all over the Rhone valley nor deal with DSUS forms. You enter your car online and get a binding offer based on the overall Swiss market. Whether the car is registered in Brig or in Monthey, on the valley floor or in a mountain village above the Rhone valley, makes no difference.
The deregistration at the DSUS is included, and from the day after the plates are deposited, you no longer owe any motor vehicle tax. We also buy a car whose periodic inspection is due, as it is. And if you have a car with all-wheel drive or a set of winter wheels that goes with it, it’s worth mentioning that in your request.

Enter your vehicle details in our online form. Your advantage: with just a few details, you get a very accurate initial offer (in practice often accurate to within +/- 1’000 CHF), because we use real market data.
Send us photos of your car and your vehicle registration document conveniently online. This allows a precise assessment without you losing time on appointments.
Based on your photos, you receive a firm, guaranteed offer – conveniently online, with no on-site viewing appointments. No renegotiation, 100% transparent.
At the handover, we initiate the payment by instant bank transfer; we pay smaller amounts in cash if you wish. We keep the vehicle registration document and VS plates to deregister the car at the DSUS.
Right at handover, with no waiting.
We transfer the purchase price during the handover itself. The money is usually in your account within seconds, secure and traceable.
For smaller amounts, for example for export vehicles, we can also pay in cash on request.
We buy cars from all three parts of the canton, in German-speaking Upper Valais as well as in French-speaking Central and Lower Valais. Around Brig-Glis, Naters and Visp, the A9 has been open all the way between Gampel/Steg and Brig since October 2025, and we accept requests from the Goms, the Lötschental or the Saastal just the same. In Central Valais, we value a car from Sion, Sierre, Conthey or Savièse by the same standards as one from Crans-Montana, the Val d’Anniviers or the Val d’Hérens. And in Lower Valais, where the road to the Great St. Bernard begins in Martigny, we buy cars from Fully and the Val de Bagnes just as we do from Monthey and Collombey-Muraz in the Chablais.
Request an offer nowThe responsible office is the Dienststelle für Strassenverkehr und Schifffahrt (DSUS), in French Service de la circulation routière et de la navigation (SCN), with locations in Sion, Visp and St-Maurice. For the plates, Valais has three options: provisional deposit at a post office in Valais for CHF 30, in which case you can reclaim the plates within two years; definitive deposit at the DSUS, in person or by mail, after which the plates are destroyed immediately; and definitive deposit by mail from abroad. Every deposit interrupts the tax liability, and the insurer is informed automatically.
For passenger cars, the Valais motor vehicle tax is based on engine displacement, applies to the calendar year and must be paid by January 31. If the plates are returned during the year, you owe nothing more from the following day, and the canton refunds the excess. We take care of the deregistration. If you want to keep your VS number, discuss it with us before the handover.

In Valais, a car rarely just drives straight ahead. If you live in a side valley or a mountain village, you’re prepared for snow in winter. The route to Italy leads over the Simplon, which is built to stay open in winter, or from Martigny through the Great St. Bernard Tunnel into the Aosta Valley, while the Furka is closed in winter. So mention in your request whether your car has all-wheel drive and whether good winter tires or a second set of wheels are included, so that we can take this into account in the valuation.
One point only affects registered keepers in Valais: the motor vehicle tax based on engine displacement. A large engine costs more here every year. For our offer, this plays no direct role, because we base it on nationwide market prices; what matters are age, mileage and condition. Describe signs of wear such as stone chips or worn tires honestly, and the offer will fit from the start. For older, high-mileage cars, export may be the better solution.
The most important factors in a vehicle valuation:
Premium brands hold their value better
The lower, the more valuable
High-end features and a powerful engine increase the value
Body, engine and transmission are assessed individually

With a provisional deposit at a post office in Valais, you pay CHF 30 and can take the plates back within two years, which is handy if you want to keep the number. With a definitive deposit at the DSUS, they are destroyed immediately. In both cases, the tax liability is interrupted, and your insurer is notified automatically. If you’d like to keep the number, tell us in good time.
The tax for the whole calendar year is due by January 31. Once the plates are back, you owe nothing more from the next day. You can claim back a credit from the DSUS accounts department. If you buy a new car at the same time, the tax for the old one ends when the new one is put on the road. So if you sell in the spring, you get most of it back.
If it belongs to the car, yes. In Valais, with its side valleys and pass roads, good winter wheels are a selling point for many prospective buyers, and we include them in the valuation. So mention the second set in your request, show it in a photo and state the age and condition of the tires. At the handover, it’s then simply part of the deal, just like the keys and vehicle registration document.
Yes. Until the end of the contract, your car legally belongs to the leasing company, so we need its settlement quote. Request it before you enter your car, and state the amount in the form. You can read what happens next and what to look out for with the settlement on our page Sell a leased car. In this case too, we deposit the VS plates at the DSUS.
Not if you sell to us. If you sell privately, however, an inspection report is a good argument, because together with the vehicle registration document it allows registration in any canton. But allow time, because the appointment is usually set for the third week after the application is received. The periodic inspections are carried out by cantonal experts; since 2008, the TCS Valais section has also been inspecting vehicles that have been called in, in Gamsen and Sion.
The motor vehicle tax based on engine displacement is paid by whoever has the car registered in Valais, so by you until the plates are returned and after that, if applicable, by the next registered keeper in Valais. Our offer, on the other hand, depends on age, mileage, condition, features and nationwide demand, and we buy cars with large engines just as we buy those with small ones. You can get an initial estimate with our free valuation.
