Selling your car in the canton of Zug: firm offer, new tax from 2027

If you want to sell your car in the canton of Zug, you live in a small canton with major transport routes. Near Rotkreuz, the A4 and A14 meet, with direct connections toward Lucerne, Zug and Zurich as well as Schwyz and the Gotthard. Zug is also a canton that many people commute into: from 2022 to 2024, an average of around 43’000 people commuted into the canton, while around 19’900 commuted out. And if you switch to the Stadtbahn commuter trains for your journey to work, for example the S1 between Baar, Zug, Cham, Rotkreuz and Lucerne, you may no longer need a second car.

With us, it works without a listing: we prepare a binding offer based on your details and photos, and there are no test drives with strangers or price discussions on the phone. Payment is made at the handover, by instant bank transfer. Especially with a second car that has mostly been sitting idle since you switched to the Stadtbahn, you save yourself the effort of a private sale.

What’s new is the Zug motor vehicle tax: from January 1, 2027, it will be based on gross weight and power for passenger cars instead of engine displacement. We explain below what this means for selling your used car. We take care of the deregistration at the road traffic office in Steinhausen, and tax liability ends when the plates arrive there.

Zug road traffic office: plates, tax and inspection

For everything to do with plates and vehicle registration documents, the road traffic office of the canton of Zug (Strassenverkehrsamt) on Hinterbergstrasse in Steinhausen is responsible. License plates can be dropped into the slot to the left of the main entrance there at any time, including at night and on weekends. Deposited plates are kept for a maximum of 365 days from the date of deposit, after which the right to use the number expires. With interchangeable plates, only the vehicle registration document of the car being taken off the road is canceled; the plates stay with the other vehicle. Vehicle inspections also take place in Steinhausen, and an inspection notice can usually be postponed free of charge by up to 30 days via eDispo.

The motor vehicle tax is owed in advance for a whole calendar year. Tax liability ends on the day the plate is returned or arrives at the road traffic office; anything not owed is credited and offset or, on request, paid back. Until the end of 2026, engine displacement counts for passenger cars; from January 1, 2027, gross weight counts at CHF 8.30 per 100 kg and power at CHF 1.20 per kW. We take care of the deregistration for you.

What you need for the sale

  • Vehicle registration document of the car you’re selling
  • Both ZG license plates, except with interchangeable plates
  • All keys, service booklet and receipts
  • Inspection report, if defects were found on the car
  • If leased: balance or settlement amount

New motor vehicle tax from 2027: what it means for your used car

From January 1, 2027, passenger cars in the canton of Zug will pay the motor vehicle tax based on gross weight and power. A transitional rule applies to cars that are already registered by then or whose plates are deposited at the road traffic office: if the new rates would lead to a higher annual tax, the previous law continues to apply until a change of ownership. This rule applies for ten years. After a change of ownership, the new assessment applies. Electric cars are assessed with a reduced weight (factor 0.8) and reduced power (factor 0.7).

For you as the seller, this means: whoever buys your car and registers it in the canton of Zug pays according to the new formula. For heavy, powerful models, the tax rises with weight and power, light cars pay correspondingly less, and electric cars benefit from the reduced factors. We ourselves calculate with prices from all over Switzerland rather than with the Zug rates, and model year, mileage, condition and features still count most. The page Calculating car value gives you a first indication.

What determines the value of your car?

The most important factors in a vehicle valuation:

  • Make & model

Premium brands hold their value better

  • Mileage

    The lower, the more valuable

  • Features & engine

High-end features and a powerful engine increase the value

  • Technical condition

Body, engine and transmission are assessed individually

What people in Zug want to know about selling a car

What changes in 2027 for the Zug motor vehicle tax?

From January 1, 2027, the tax for passenger cars will be based on gross weight (CHF 8.30 per 100 kg) and power (CHF 1.20 per kW) instead of engine displacement. If the new tax would be higher for a car that is already registered, the previous law applies until the next change of ownership; this transitional rule applies for ten years. After a sale, the new registered keeper pays according to the new assessment, provided they register the car in the canton of Zug.

Can I simply drop the plates off in Steinhausen?

Yes, the license plate drop slot to the left of the road traffic office’s main entrance is accessible around the clock. If you sell to us, you don’t need to make this trip: you hand us the plates at the handover, and we then handle the deregistration. You are liable for the tax until the plates arrive at the office; anything overpaid is credited or, on request, paid back.

I have interchangeable plates. What happens when I sell?

You keep the plates for your other vehicle. In this case, the Zug road traffic office has to cancel the vehicle registration document of the car that is being taken off the road. So give us the vehicle registration document of the car you’re selling at the handover, and tell us in advance that interchangeable plates are involved. We take care of the cancellation.

My car failed the inspection. Will you still buy it?

Yes, we’ll take a car with defects or an inspection that is due off your hands too. Good to know: in the canton of Zug, if a vehicle with recorded defects is taken off the road, its plate is deposited or its ownership changes while an inspection is still in progress, the inspection must be repeated in full. When you sell to us, that’s no longer your concern. Describe the defects in the form and show them in the photos.

Can I postpone my inspection notice until the sale has gone through?

Usually yes, and free of charge: via eDispo, a notice from the Zug road traffic office can be postponed by up to 30 days. That gives you time if you want to wait for our offer first. If you sell privately and want to prove the condition to buyers, you can also have a voluntary inspection done in Steinhausen at any time, explicitly also before a sale.

How long does my ZG number stay reserved after the sale?

The Zug road traffic office keeps deposited plates for a maximum of 365 days, after which the right to use the number expires. The period runs from the date of deposit. So if you want to keep your number for a later car, you have to register it again within one year. By the way, handing in and depositing plates are subject to daily taxation: tax is only due until the plates arrive at the office.
