Selling your car in Thurgau often means parting with a commuter car. According to the cantonal Office for Data and Statistics (January 2025), two thirds of Thurgau’s commuters drive to work, and almost 90 percent of those who work outside the canton commute to the cantons of St. Gallen or Zurich. That adds up to quite a lot of mileage on the A1 and A7 – and after work, there’s little time left for listings, calls and test drives with strangers.
A high-mileage car is no obstacle for us. We work with current prices from the Swiss market and assess mileage, condition and service history objectively instead of haggling with you over every franc on the phone. An MFK (vehicle inspection) that is due doesn’t slow down the sale either, because a fresh inspection report is not a requirement for us to buy; so you don’t have to wait for an appointment at the Thurgau road traffic office.
We also save you the trip to the Thurgau road traffic office, because the deregistration is part of our service. So you don’t have to stand in line at the counter in Frauenfeld or Amriswil. We explain below what happens to your license plates and the motor vehicle tax and how you can keep your TG number.
Enter your vehicle details now and get an offer right away.
Request an offer
Enter your vehicle details in our online form. Your advantage: with just a few details, you get a very accurate initial offer (in practice often accurate to within +/- 1’000 CHF), because we use real market data.
Send us photos of your car and your vehicle registration document conveniently online. This allows a precise assessment without you losing time on appointments.
Based on your photos, you receive a firm, guaranteed offer – conveniently online, with no on-site viewing appointments. No renegotiation, 100% transparent.
At the handover, you get the agreed purchase price by instant bank transfer, or in cash for smaller amounts if you wish. You give us the keys and vehicle registration document, and we take care of the deregistration.
Right at handover, with no waiting.
We transfer the purchase price during the handover itself. The money is usually in your account within seconds, secure and traceable.
For smaller amounts, for example for export vehicles, we can also pay in cash on request.
Whether your car is registered in Frauenfeld or in a village on the Seerücken makes no difference to us: we buy used cars from all five districts of the canton on the same terms. That applies to Kreuzlingen, where the A7 ends at the border with Konstanz, just as it does to Romanshorn with its car ferry to Friedrichshafen or to Arbon on Lake Constance. We buy in the Mittelthurgau around Weinfelden and Bischofszell just as we do in the Hinterthurgau between Aadorf, Sirnach and Münchwilen. And if you live on the Untersee in Steckborn or on the Rhine in Diessenhofen, you get your offer online just like someone in Amriswil, where the road traffic office has its second location.
Request an offer nowThe responsible office is the Thurgau road traffic office (Strassenverkehrsamt), with locations in Frauenfeld and Amriswil. When a sold car is deregistered, the office cancels the vehicle registration document. If no new vehicle follows within two weeks, the license plates must be returned: at the counter, by mail together with the original vehicle registration document and the form “Anmeldung zur Fahrzeugzulassung” (vehicle registration application), or via the plate drop box. There, the color of the slot decides. Green means free destruction, and you get a new number later. Blue means deposit for one year in Frauenfeld, for CHF 30 in the first year and CHF 50 per year for each extension. The insurer is informed that the plates have been handed in.
The Thurgau motor vehicle tax is generally based on engine displacement and is charged for every day the car is registered, even though the annual bill arrives in January. When the plates are handed in, the tax stops automatically, and anything overpaid is refunded. We take care of these steps for you: you give us the plates and the vehicle registration document at the handover, and we take care of the rest.
Because our customers matter most to us, verkaufedeinauto.ch gives you a platform where you can conveniently – at any time of day – have your car’s value estimated from home. Our team supports you personally from the valuation to the handover – for a fast, smooth sale and immediate payment. If you’d like to find out more, visit our About us page.
You get a firm offer for your car in no time, based on your photos. No negotiating and no obligation whatsoever.
Fast and stress-free: upload your photos, and we’ll take care of the rest. No lengthy appointments and no tough negotiations.

One Thurgau peculiarity is the motor vehicle tax based on the energy label, with a discount for efficient and a surcharge for inefficient new cars. New passenger cars in category A get a 50 percent reduction on the motor vehicle tax and those in category B 25 percent, in the year of first registration and the four following years. New cars in categories F and G, on the other hand, pay a 50 percent surcharge for as long as they are registered. The discount and surcharge are tied to the vehicle: after a change of ownership, they also apply to the new registered keeper.
So anyone looking for a used car in Thurgau pays attention not only to the purchase price but also to whether a tax discount or surcharge comes with it. We buy both and work with data from the Swiss market. However, age, mileage and condition have the greatest influence. With commuter cars in particular, it pays to have service records and invoices ready, because they show that the high mileage came with good care.
The most important factors in a vehicle valuation:
Premium brands hold their value better
The lower, the more valuable
High-end features and a powerful engine increase the value
Body, engine and transmission are assessed individually

We do. At the handover, you give us the vehicle registration document and license plates; we then deregister the car, and the document is canceled. The insurer is informed that the plates have been handed in. If a new car comes along within 14 days, you may keep the plates – in that case, tell us before the handover so that the plates stay with you.
Yes. The Thurgau motor vehicle tax is charged for every day the car is registered, even though you get the bill for the whole year in January. It stops automatically when the plates are handed in, and the overpaid part is refunded. So if you sell in February instead of November, you get considerably more back.
Yes. If a new vehicle is registered in your name within two weeks, you simply keep the plates. Otherwise, they can be deposited: via the blue slot of the plate drop box, they stay reserved for one year in Frauenfeld, which costs CHF 30; each extension costs CHF 50 per year. If you don’t care about the number, the green slot leads to free destruction.
Not with us: we buy your car even if the inspection is due or has expired. If you sell privately, you can arrange a voluntary inspection in Frauenfeld or Amriswil through the scheduling desk of the Thurgau road traffic office to prove that the car is roadworthy. To reduce backlogs, the office has been offering additional inspection appointments on Saturday mornings for one year since June 2026.
Yes, you can. As long as the contract is running, the car belongs to the leasing company, so first ask them for the current settlement amount and give it to us in your request. If our offer is higher than this amount, you keep the difference. Our guide to leased cars shows how this works in detail. We also take care of the deregistration at the Thurgau road traffic office for a leased car.
The tax discount is tied to the vehicle, not to you. A car that was registered new in category A or B keeps the reduction in the year of first registration and the four following years, even after a change of ownership. For a buyer in Thurgau, that’s a plus. Our offer is based mainly on age, mileage, condition and prices on the Swiss market; find out more under Calculating car value.
