Between Lake Zurich and the Muotatal: how to sell your car

Would you like to sell your car in the canton of Schwyz without a listing, without haggling on the phone and without strangers on test drives? Then send us the vehicle details, a few pictures and the vehicle registration document via the form. You then have a firm offer, and you decide in your own time. If you say yes, the price stays as it is, with no renegotiation at all.

The canton is divided in two. Ausserschwyz, with the Höfe and the March, is part of the built-up belt along Lake Zurich and looks toward Rapperswil-Jona and Zurich; the A3 runs right through it, and the Seedamm causeway connects Pfäffikon with Rapperswil. Innerschwyz looks toward Lucerne, Zug and Zurich and is served by the A4, which runs from Rotkreuz along Lake Zug and Lake Lauerz and over the Axenstrasse to Flüelen. According to the canton’s overall transport strategy, the car is indispensable for everyday life in the rural areas. According to its 2017 analysis, 72.8 percent of the daily distance traveled in the canton was covered by private motorized transport, compared with 66.4 percent across Switzerland.

For your sale, that makes no difference. Whether you live by the lake in Lachen, in Einsiedeln or deep in the Muotatal: the process is the same, and we save you the trip to the road traffic office, whether in Schwyz or in Pfäffikon. The only important thing is that your details are correct, because our offer is based on them.

Car buying in Schwyz: from the Höfe to the Muotatal

Every area of Schwyz has its own character, and we buy cars from all of them. In the Höfe around Pfäffikon, Wollerau and Feusisberg, Zurich is close, and the Seedamm leads across to Rapperswil. The March, with Lachen, Galgenen and Wangen, lies on the A3, and behind it the Wägital stretches into the mountains. In Innerschwyz, Schwyz, Brunnen and Arth look more toward Lucerne and Zug, and Gersau and Küssnacht lie on Lake Lucerne. Einsiedeln with its monastery lies on the Sihlsee, with the Ybrig behind it, and in the Muotatal begins the road over the Pragel, which is usually closed from November to June. We buy from all these areas on the same terms.

Schwyz road traffic office: registration document, plates and motor vehicle tax

The responsible office is the road traffic office of the canton of Schwyz (Verkehrsamt), with counters in Schwyz and in Pfäffikon. When a car is sold, the vehicle registration document goes to the new registered keeper; if a car is taken off the road permanently, the road traffic office cancels the document free of charge. But that doesn’t take the license plates out of circulation: if they don’t go on another vehicle within 14 days, they must be returned. You can hand them in at the counter in Schwyz or Pfäffikon, in the road traffic office’s mailbox, at the responsible police station in the canton or by mail, in each case cleaned and without frames. If you sell to us, we take care of this deregistration.

Important for your wallet: the motor vehicle tax keeps running as long as the plates have not been deposited, because canceling the registration document alone doesn’t stop it. From the day after the plates are handed in, neither tax nor insurance premium is charged; the road traffic office refunds anything already paid or credits it to you with the next statement. The road traffic office reserves deposited plates for you for one year. The fee of Fr. 30.– only becomes due when you register them again, and each one-year extension also costs Fr. 30.–. Your insurer is informed automatically.

What you need for the sale

  • Vehicle registration document (it goes to the buyer when you sell)
  • Both license plates, clean and without frames
  • All vehicle keys along with the service booklet
  • Latest inspection report or the current MFK notice
  • Official ID (ID card or passport)
  • If leased: lease agreement or remaining term

Selling a used car in Schwyz: with a fresh MFK or as it is?

The Schwyz road traffic office itself says that a car usually fetches a better price if it has passed an official inspection immediately before the sale – “ab MFK” (with a freshly passed MFK), as many listings put it. You can arrange such a voluntary inspection at the locations or by phone. But we also buy your car without one. Whether it’s worth it depends on the condition: if your car is technically sound, a fresh inspection report can support the price. If expensive repairs are due, it may be cheaper to sell the car as it is.

Where in the canton a vehicle comes from also leaves its mark. If you drive from the Höfe or the March on the A3 every day, you’re mostly on the motorway. If your home is in the Muotatal, the Ybrig or Einsiedeln, you drive up more climbs and, in winter, over snow and salt. So describe exactly how the car was used, and mention features that count in a Schwyz winter. Our free valuation shows you roughly what your car is worth in advance.

What determines the value of your car?

The most important factors in a vehicle valuation:

  • Make & model

Premium brands hold their value better

  • Mileage

    The lower, the more valuable

  • Features & engine

High-end features and a powerful engine increase the value

  • Technical condition

Body, engine and transmission are assessed individually

Selling your car in the canton of Schwyz: questions and answers

Is it enough to have the vehicle registration document canceled at the road traffic office?

No. The cancellation doesn’t take the license plates out of circulation, and the motor vehicle tax keeps running until the plates are deposited. If you don’t need them for another car within 14 days, you must hand them in. If you sell to us, we take care of this deregistration, and you don’t have to go to the road traffic office yourself.

Where can I hand in license plates in the canton of Schwyz?

At the road traffic office’s counter in Schwyz or Pfäffikon, in its mailbox, at the responsible police station in the canton or by mail. The plates must be cleaned and without frames. If you sell to us, you don’t have to do this: we take care of the deregistration. If the plates are to go on your next car, you simply keep them.

Should I still take my car for inspection before the sale?

With us, you don’t have to. The Schwyz road traffic office does point out that a freshly inspected car usually fetches more, but the inspection costs time and sometimes repairs. We also take a car whose MFK is due or has already expired. Tell us in your request when the last inspection was and whether you’ve already received a notice.

Can I sell a leased car in the canton of Schwyz?

Yes, even though it belongs to the leasing company until the end of the contract. Give us the name of the leasing company and the remaining term with your request; the settlement amount then makes it clear what you’ll keep from the purchase price. Our guide on selling with a lease still running gives you an overview of the process.

Where can I have my car inspected voluntarily in the canton of Schwyz?

Inspections take place at the road traffic office in Schwyz and Pfäffikon and at the inspection centers in Einsiedeln/Trachslau and Ibach, the latter only by appointment. You arrange a voluntary inspection at the locations or by phone. A notice for the periodic inspection comes by mail; it can’t be canceled, but it can be postponed. Selling to us doesn’t require either inspection.

Can I keep my Schwyz number?

Yes. Deposited license plates stay reserved for you for one year. You only pay the deposit fee of Fr. 30.– when you register the number again, and each extension by another year also costs Fr. 30.–. If another car is already waiting for you, simply register it with the same plates.
