SCAN in Malvilliers: deregistration and motor vehicle tax in Neuchâtel

In the canton of Neuchâtel, the Service cantonal des automobiles et de la navigation (SCAN) in Malvilliers is responsible. When you sell, the registered keeper must have the vehicle registration document canceled, most quickly and free of charge online via the Guichet unique, or by mail to the SCAN. You may only keep the plates if you register a new vehicle within 14 days; otherwise, they must be deposited clean and without frames: by mail, in the plate drop box at the roundabout in front of the SCAN, which is also accessible outside opening hours, or for CHF 20 at one of 16 post offices in the canton of Neuchâtel. The office keeps deposited plates free of charge for one year; each additional year costs CHF 20, and if you waive storage, you receive a credit of CHF 5.

The canton bills the motor vehicle tax at the start of the year for the whole year; it is reduced by the days on which the plates are deposited. Only depositing the plates automatically triggers the pro rata refund: the credit note comes by mail, and if your bank details are known, the amount is paid out automatically. The liability insurer is also informed of the deposit date automatically. If you have an inspection appointment at the SCAN, the deposit or cancellation should take place at least four days beforehand. We take care of the entire process at the SCAN as soon as your car belongs to us.

The Neuchâtel car market: close to the border, Jura heights and lakeshore

With the French border on the doorstep, it’s worth looking beyond the national border: according to cantonal statistics, 16’205 cross-border commuters traveled to work in the canton in the fourth quarter of 2025, and the N20 ends at the Col-des-Roches border crossing. Do I have to cancel the vehicle registration document at the SCAN myself?

No, we do that as part of the deregistration. In principle, the registered keeper must have the document canceled when selling, most quickly and free of charge online via the Guichet unique, otherwise by mail. Good to know: in the canton of Neuchâtel, only depositing the plates triggers the pro rata refund of the motor vehicle tax; the cancellation alone is not enough.

Can I keep my NE plates?

Only if your next car is registered within 14 days; otherwise, the plates must be deposited. The SCAN keeps them free of charge for one year, and each additional year costs CHF 20. If you no longer need the number, you can waive storage and receive a credit of CHF 5. Tell us in your request what you plan to do with the plates.

My car’s plates are already at the SCAN. Will you still buy it?

Yes. Deposited plates don’t stop you from selling your car to us. In this case, the deposit has already triggered the pro rata refund of the motor vehicle tax, and the liability insurer also knows the date. All that remains is the cancellation of the vehicle registration document at the SCAN, and we take care of that as part of the deregistration. For your offer, we need photos and the main vehicle details, as usual.

How do I get the Neuchâtel motor vehicle tax back?

Automatically, as soon as the plates are deposited. The tax is charged at the start of the year for the whole year; it is reduced for the days after the deposit. The credit note comes by mail; if the SCAN knows your bank details, it pays out the amount automatically. So check whether your current bank details are on file with the office.

I hardly speak any French. Is that a problem?

Not for the formalities: we take care of the deregistration at the SCAN, so you don’t have to fill in any of the office’s forms. Your request and the offer are handled in English via our website. Do you also take a car that has failed the MFK?

Yes. Defects, an expired inspection or accident damage don’t rule out a purchase. If you already have an inspection appointment at the SCAN in Malvilliers or at the TCS, note that the deposit or cancellation should take place at least four days before the appointment. For older vehicles, selling for export may be the better solution.
