How selling your car for export works – in 4 simple steps
1
Request a non-binding export offer
Enter your vehicle details in our online form. Your advantage: with minimal effort, you get a very accurate initial offer (in practice often accurate to within +/- 1’000 CHF), because we use real international market data – not just Swiss Eurotax values.
2
Send photos & vehicle registration document
Send us photos of your car and your vehicle registration document conveniently online – via WhatsApp, email or our upload tool. This lets us carry out a precise assessment without you losing time on appointments. Instead of advertising on listing sites for weeks, we’ll show you how selling a car works today – fast, transparent and fair, for export vehicles too.
3
Get a guaranteed export offer
Based on your photos and details, you receive a firm, guaranteed offer at export market value – conveniently online, with no tedious on-site viewing appointments. No renegotiation, 100% transparent. The price quoted is binding, provided the vehicle’s condition matches your description.
4
Vehicle handover & immediate payment
We agree on the date of the handover with you – also for vehicles without a valid MFK or license plates. You receive the purchase price immediately at handover: in cash or by instant bank transfer. We’ll handle the deregistration with the road traffic office for you.
How you get your money
Right at handover, with no waiting.
Instant bank transfer Recommended
We transfer the purchase price during the handover itself. The money is usually in your account within seconds, secure and traceable.
Cash payment
For smaller amounts, for example for export vehicles, we can also pay in cash on request.
Checklist: the documents you need for an export sale
To make sure the sale of your export car goes smoothly, you should have the following documents ready:
What to bring
Vehicle registration document (original)
Valid ID card or passport of the registered owner
Service booklet (if available – can increase the price by up to 15 %)
All car keys (main and spare keys)
Power of attorney for company vehicles or if the seller is not the registered owner
Lease confirmation or settlement amount, if the vehicle is leased
Latest MFK inspection report (if available – not mandatory)
What we take care of for you:
Deregistration with the road traffic office (StVA)
The good news: almost every vehicle finds a buyer on the international market. Here are the most common types of vehicles we buy for export:
Cars without a valid MFK
No longer approved for Swiss roads, easy to use abroad
High-mileage vehicles (150’000+ km)
In many countries, this is where their second life begins
Accident-damaged cars and vehicles with body damage
Repairs are much cheaper in export countries
Cars with engine or transmission damage
High demand for spare parts and vehicles to repair
Diesel vehicles
Increasingly unpopular in Switzerland, in high demand internationally
Company cars and fleet vehicles
We also buy larger numbers of vehicles at once
Electric and hybrid vehicles
Growing demand in emerging markets
Classic cars and collector’s vehicles
Of interest to collectors worldwide
Why are these vehicles still in demand abroad?
Many export countries apply different inspection standards than Switzerland. The strict MFK doesn’t exist there in this form. At the same time, local workshops specialize in repairs, spare parts are available and labor costs are much lower. A vehicle that is considered an “economic total loss” in Switzerland can still run reliably for years in Eastern Europe, Africa or the Middle East.
Before you offer your vehicle for export, you should calculate your car’s value – these factors largely determine the price you can get.

Why is the export price often higher than the Swiss market value?
The Swiss used car market is largely determined by the Eurotax valuation and the mandatory MFK. A vehicle without a valid MFK immediately loses 30–50 % of its residual value on the Swiss market, as the buyer factors in the costs of repairs and re-inspection. In most export markets – such as West Africa, Eastern Europe or the Middle East – these strict inspection standards either don’t exist or are much less restrictive.
On top of that, Switzerland has one of the youngest vehicle fleets in Europe. A 12-year-old vehicle with 200’000 km is considered “old” here – in many export countries, the second life of such a car is only just beginning. Local workshops specialize in repairs, spare parts are available, and demand for reliable European brands such as VW, Mercedes, BMW and Toyota is consistently high.
According to data from the Federal Office for Customs and Border Security (FOCBS), over 85’000 passenger cars were exported from Switzerland in 2023. This market is not a niche phenomenon – it’s an established industry.

Fair pricing – how we value your export car
Our price promise – transparent and binding
We know that trust is crucial when selling a car. That’s why we’re open about how our business model works: we buy your vehicle at its fair export market value and resell it through our international dealer network. Our margin comes from the difference between the Swiss purchase price and the international selling price – not from hidden deductions at handover.
What this means for you in practice:
The price we quote you by phone or email is binding – provided the vehicle’s condition matches your description.
There are no “surprise deductions” at the inspection.
Deregistration and paperwork are included in our price – no additional fees.
You receive payment immediately at handover – in cash or by instant bank transfer, whichever you prefer.
If our offer doesn’t meet your expectations, you incur no costs whatsoever. The valuation is always free and non-binding.
What determines the export price of your car?
The most important factors in an export vehicle valuation:
Make & model
Toyota, Mercedes, VW and BMW are particularly popular on international markets. Premium brands and Japanese manufacturers achieve above-average prices for export.
Mileage
The lower, the more valuable – but vehicles with 200’000+ km are also in demand for export, as life expectancy is viewed differently in many countries.
Features & engine
High-end features, all-wheel drive and diesel engines increase the export value. Air conditioning and automatic transmissions are particularly sought after in warm destination countries.
Vehicle condition
Body, engine and interior are assessed individually. Even damaged vehicles still fetch good prices for export – repairs are much cheaper in the destination countries.
Current demand in the destination country
Export prices fluctuate depending on demand in the destination countries. Our team monitors the international markets every day and can therefore determine the optimal price for your vehicle.
Logistics costs
Transport and shipping costs affect the final price. Vehicles that are suitable for container shipping often achieve higher export prices.
Which countries are Swiss cars exported to?
The main destination countries for Swiss export vehicles are:
Eastern Europe
Poland, Romania, Bulgaria, Serbia, Kosovo
Africa
Ghana, Nigeria, Tanzania, Kenya, Congo
Middle East
Iraq, Lebanon, Jordan, United Arab Emirates
Central Asia
Georgia, Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan
Swiss cars have an excellent reputation in these regions. The reasons: high maintenance standards, little corrosion thanks to well-maintained roads, regular service intervals and the generally high quality of European vehicles. For you as a seller, this means: international demand secures you a fair price – even for vehicles that no longer have a market in Switzerland.

“My 2009 Opel Astra with 198’000 km no longer had a valid MFK and was leaking oil from the engine. Two garages didn’t even want to take it as a trade-in. I sent an online request to verkaufedeinauto.ch and received an offer of CHF 1’400 just 90 minutes later. The next day, the car was picked up in Aarau, I got the money in cash, and verkaufedeinauto.ch took care of the deregistration with the road traffic office for me. It doesn’t get any easier than that.”

“After a rear-end collision, my Mercedes C220 CDI was sitting there with damage to the rear. The insurance company declared it an economic total loss. Through verkaufedeinauto.ch, I still got CHF 3’200 for the car – much more than my insurer’s salvage offer. The whole process took less than 48 hours.”

Sustainability: why exporting a car is better than scrapping it
Many vehicle owners face the question: scrap or sell? From an environmental point of view, export is by far the more sustainable solution. Instead of dismantling a vehicle and recycling its raw materials at great expense, your car gets a second life in a country where it will be driven for years to come.
Your car has reached the end of the road – but not everywhere. Give it a second life instead of scrapping it.
Conserving resources: Manufacturing a new car uses an average of 20–35 tons of raw materials. Every extra year an existing vehicle stays in use saves a considerable share of these resources.
Less e-waste: Battery disposal is particularly problematic for hybrid and electric vehicles. Through export, these vehicles continue to be used instead of being disposed of.
Circular economy: Even vehicles that no longer run in the destination country provide valuable spare parts for other cars of the same make.
Selling your car for export – what you should know legally
When selling your car for export in Switzerland, there are a few legal aspects you should be aware of:
Purchase agreement
We draw up a written purchase agreement with all relevant details – vehicle data, purchase price, buyer and seller details and the transfer of liability.
Deregistration
The vehicle must be deregistered with the road traffic office within 14 days of the transfer of ownership (Art. 104 SVG). We take care of this step entirely for you.
Insurance
After deregistration, inform your car insurer that the vehicle has been taken off the road. This way, you avoid paying unnecessary premiums.
Liability after the sale
Once the purchase agreement has been signed and the car handed over, liability passes to the buyer. After the sale and payment, you have no further obligations.
Legality
Yes, it’s completely legal to sell a car without a valid MFK to an export dealer. The vehicle is no longer used on Swiss roads but is intended for export.
FAQ: selling your car for export
How does selling my car for export work?
The process is simple and transparent: 1. You fill in our free online form with your vehicle details. 2. Within 24 hours, you receive a binding offer based on international market prices. 3. We arrange an appointment for the vehicle inspection and handover at the location of your choice. 4. You receive the purchase agreement and immediate payment – in cash or by instant bank transfer. 5. We take care of the deregistration with the road traffic office (StVA) and the entire export process. The whole thing often takes just 1–2 days.
Why is the export price often higher than the Swiss residual value?
Swiss cars have an excellent reputation abroad because they are usually well maintained and, thanks to Switzerland’s well-kept roads, show less rust. In many destination countries, the inspection requirements are much less strict than the Swiss MFK. Demand for quality European vehicles is consistently high in Eastern Europe, Africa and the Middle East. At the same time, repairs in these countries are considerably cheaper than in Switzerland. All these factors mean that the export price can significantly exceed the Swiss residual value – especially for older or damaged vehicles.
What documents do I need to sell my car for export?
You need the original vehicle registration document (parts 1 and 2), a valid ID card or passport, the service booklet if available, all car keys and, for company vehicles, a power of attorney. We provide the purchase agreement based on the TCS template. Our team takes care of the deregistration with the road traffic office – you don’t have to worry about anything else.
Can I also sell a car with engine damage, accident damage or without a valid MFK?
Yes, absolutely. Export buyers purchase vehicles in almost any condition: accident-damaged cars, vehicles with engine or transmission damage, high mileage or an expired MFK. Abroad, repairs are much cheaper and demand for spare parts is high. Even vehicles that are considered an economic total loss in Switzerland still fetch good prices for export. Example: a Toyota Avensis with engine damage that would only be worth CHF 500 in Switzerland can fetch CHF 2’800 for export.
Which is safer: an export sale, a private sale or a dealer trade-in?
An export sale through a professional buyer such as verkaufedeinauto.ch is the safest option: you receive immediate payment at handover and a written purchase agreement, and you don’t have to create a listing or arrange test drives. A private sale potentially offers higher prices for newer cars but carries risks such as attempted fraud and warranty obligations. A dealer trade-in is convenient when buying a new car but often brings the lowest price. For older, damaged or high-mileage vehicles, an export sale is usually the best choice.
How is the export price for my car calculated?
The valuation is based on several factors: make and model (Toyota, Mercedes and VW are particularly popular), year of manufacture, mileage, vehicle condition (body, engine, interior), current demand in the destination country and logistics costs. We don’t rely purely on Eurotax values but base our valuation on actual international market prices. The result is a transparent, binding offer with no hidden deductions.
Show all 10 questionsShow fewer questions
Which countries are the cars exported to?
The main destinations are Eastern Europe (Poland, Romania, Bulgaria), Africa (Ghana, Nigeria, Tanzania), the Middle East (Iraq, Lebanon) and Central Asia (Georgia, Kazakhstan), but also Kosovo, Serbia, Bosnia and Moldova. Swiss cars are sought after there because of their high maintenance standards, low corrosion and the reliability of European models. This is relevant for you as a seller because international demand secures a fair price – even for vehicles that no longer have a market in Switzerland.
Who takes care of deregistration and insurance after the sale?
We take care of the deregistration with the road traffic office and all export logistics. After the sale, you should cancel or suspend your car insurance yourself – ideally only once you have received the deregistration confirmation. We clearly record the transfer of liability in the purchase agreement. After handover and payment, you have no further obligations.
How can I be sure the payment will be handled properly?
Your security is our top priority. We offer you several safeguards: Cash payment at handover – you receive the agreed amount in cash and can check it immediately. Instant bank transfer – alternatively, we transfer the amount in real time to your Swiss bank account, so you can see the money arrive before you hand over the key. Purchase agreement – you receive a written purchase agreement with all the details. Identification – at the handover, our employee identifies themselves with a company ID and an ID card. As a general rule, we advise against handing over a vehicle without a written purchase agreement and immediate payment – no matter who you’re selling to.
Can I sell my car without the vehicle registration document?
In exceptional cases, a sale is also possible without the vehicle registration document, but the process is more complicated. We recommend applying for a replacement vehicle registration document at the responsible road traffic office before the sale. Contact us for individual advice – together, we’ll find a solution.
