Deregistration at the Motorfahrzeugkontrolle Basel-Landschaft

What other cantons call the road traffic office is, in the Baselbiet, the Motorfahrzeugkontrolle Basel-Landschaft (MFK BL), with its vehicle registration office in Füllinsdorf. Vehicle inspections, on the other hand, are carried out by the Motorfahrzeug-Prüfstation beider Basel (MFP), the inspection station that Basel-Landschaft and Basel-Stadt run jointly in Münchenstein and Itingen. When you sell, the original vehicle registration document is canceled, free of charge at the counter or by mail. You then have 14 days to register another vehicle with the plates or to deposit them.

The plates can be deposited free of charge in Füllinsdorf, at the MFP counter, at a cantonal police station or, outside opening hours, via the MFK mailbox; in that case, the next business day counts. Frames must be removed beforehand, and the plates should be clean. The MFK reports the deposit to the liability insurer. If your car had already received a notice to appear for inspection, it must first pass an official inspection before it can be put back on the road.

The motor vehicle tax is usually paid in advance for the whole calendar year. Tax liability ends on the day the plates are returned, and the MFK settles partial years by the day. A special rule applies around the turn of the year: for vehicles taken off the road between December 27 and January 5, the tax is neither charged nor refunded. We take care of the cancellation and deposit for you.

Selling a used car in the Baselbiet: weight, CO2 and age

The motor vehicle tax in the Baselbiet is based on gross weight. For passenger cars, a permanent surcharge or a temporary reduction is added, depending on the CO2 emissions according to the type approval. So a heavy car with a high CO2 figure costs its registered keeper more every year than a light, efficient one, and that can be reflected in what buyers are willing to pay for a used car.

Age brings an inspection rule into play: if the first registration was more than ten years ago and the last inspection is no longer within the interval, the car must pass an official inspection before it can be registered in the name of a new keeper. For private buyers, this means extra effort. We still buy such vehicles and value them as they are; older vehicles with high mileage often still find buyers through export.

Questions about selling your car in the Baselbiet

Do I have to go to the MFK in Füllinsdorf?

No. Hand the car over to us as it is, with the vehicle registration document and plates. We have the document canceled at the Motorfahrzeugkontrolle Basel-Landschaft, take care of depositing the plates and then send you the confirmation. The MFK also informs your liability insurer about the deposit; still, a short message from you to your insurer doesn’t hurt.

When do I get back motor vehicle tax I have overpaid?

Once the plates have been deposited, the MFK sends you a credit note if you have a credit balance. Amounts from CHF 30 are paid out; smaller amounts are credited. To make sure the money ends up in the right account, you can report your bank details via the MFK’s online counter. Because the tax is settled by the day, you only pay for the time until the plates are returned.

What applies to the tax if I sell around the turn of the year?

The Baselbiet has its own rule for this: if you take your car off the road between December 27 and January 5, the motor vehicle tax is neither charged nor refunded for this. Outside this window, the MFK settles by the day; one day costs 1/365 of the annual tax. What counts is the date the plates are returned, and we take care of that for you.

My car has plates from another canton. Is that a problem?

No. The MFK BL doesn’t cancel vehicle registration documents from other cantons; in that case, the road traffic office of the canton where your car is registered is responsible. For you, that changes nothing, because we take care of the deregistration anyway. Just state in the form which canton’s plates your car has, for example BS or SO, so that we can handle the formalities at the right office.

What is the difference between the MFK BL and the MFP?

The Motorfahrzeugkontrolle Basel-Landschaft (MFK BL) in Füllinsdorf is responsible for registration, plates and taxes. The Motorfahrzeug-Prüfstation beider Basel (MFP) inspects vehicles in Münchenstein and Itingen. For us to buy your car, you don’t need an appointment at the MFP, even if your car is older or the next inspection is coming up. We take care of the formalities at the MFK.

Can I sell my car if it’s still leased?

Yes. Legally, a leased car belongs to the leasing company, so the lease has to be settled. We handle the communication with the leasing company and coordinate the settlement; the rest, after deducting the settlement amount, goes to you at the handover.
