Selling your car in Glarus, in the Unterland or at the very end of the valley: with us, it’s equally simple everywhere, with no listing, no test drives with strangers and no haggling. Since the municipal reform of 2011, the canton of Glarus has consisted of just three municipalities, Glarus Nord, Glarus and Glarus Süd, which correspond to the Unterland, Mittelland and Hinterland. Which of them your car is registered in makes no difference to how we proceed.
In the Glarnerland, a car often has to do two things. The canton itself advertises “living in the mountains and working in the city”, made possible by the A3 junction in Glarus Nord, the Ziegelbrücke rail hub and SBB trains every half hour. If you commute like this, your mileage quickly adds up. If you live in the Hinterland, on the other hand, you need a vehicle that gets you home safely in winter too. The Klausen Pass (1948 m above sea level), the pass road to Uri, is closed at that time of year anyway.
And for the sale? With us, mileage, winter equipment and drivetrain simply go into the valuation as usual. You send photos and the vehicle registration document, get a binding offer and decide in your own time whether to sell. If you accept, you’re paid at the handover, by instant bank transfer. After that, the deregistration in Schwanden is our job.
Enter your vehicle details now and get an offer right away.

Enter your vehicle details in our online form. Your advantage: with just a few details, you get a very accurate initial offer (in practice often accurate to within +/- 1’000 CHF), because we use real market data.
Send us photos of your car and your vehicle registration document conveniently online. This allows a precise assessment without you losing time on appointments.
Based on your photos, you receive a firm, guaranteed offer – conveniently online, with no on-site viewing appointments. No renegotiation, 100% transparent.
The handover involves the sales contract, keys and vehicle registration document: you sign, hand everything over and receive the agreed price immediately by instant bank transfer. Then we deregister the car.
Right at handover, with no waiting.
We transfer the purchase price during the handover itself. The money is usually in your account within seconds, secure and traceable.
For smaller amounts, for example for export vehicles, we can also pay in cash on request.
The Glarnerland is compact, and we buy cars from every corner of it. In the Unterland around Näfels and Niederurnen are the A3 junction and the Ziegelbrücke rail hub, and high above Lake Walen, the Kerenzerberg also belongs to the municipality of Glarus Nord. In the Glarus Mittelland, a road leads from the capital up into the Klöntal, and Netstal and Ennenda are now part of the municipality of Glarus. In the Hinterland, the road traffic office is based in Schwanden. From Linthal, the pass road over the Klausen, which is closed in winter, leads to Uri, and Elm lies at the very end of the Sernftal.
Request an offer nowThe responsible office is the road traffic office of the canton of Glarus (Strassenverkehrs- und Schifffahrtsamt) in Schwanden. If you sell your car, you submit the vehicle registration document there for cancellation. If no other vehicle has been registered after 14 days, the license plates must be deposited: by mail, at the counter or, outside opening hours, in the mailbox at the site entrance. The office automatically reports the deposit to the insurer. After the purchase, we take care of this deregistration for you.
The motor vehicle tax is worth a close look: in the canton of Glarus, it is due on January 1 for the whole year, payable within 30 days, for every vehicle that has not been taken off the road by the end of the year. So if you are planning to sell anyway, it’s better not to put it off until after New Year. Tax and insurance premium are no longer owed from the day after the plates are handed in, and the office refunds the tax for the days the car is off the road, but only on request. Nothing under CHF 10 is paid out, and the claim expires after three years. The office keeps deposited plates ready for you for one year; for CHF 50, it extends this by another year, and without an extension, they are then reissued without notice. If you have already booked an inspection appointment in Schwanden, you manage it online via the Internet-Dispo booking system.

All-wheel drive is widespread in the canton of Glarus. According to the Swiss Federal Office of Energy, 57.5 percent of the passenger cars newly registered in the canton in 2025 had all-wheel drive, ranking 8th of the 26 cantons. So a well-kept all-wheel-drive car with winter equipment is no rarity here, but a used car of the kind many people drive in this mountain canton.
That’s why details that matter in everyday mountain life count in the valuation: a second set of wheels, a tow bar, the condition of the brakes and underbody after winters of salt and grit. If you drive to work on the A3 every day, your car’s mileage may be above average. With a complete service booklet, that’s no flaw, so take a photo of the booklet too. If your car is older or has technical problems, selling it for export may be the right way; we buy such vehicles too.
If your car is leased, you can still sell it before the end of the contract. We arrange the settlement directly with the leasing company, and whatever is left after the settlement amount is yours. Our leasing page Sell a leased car has the details.
The most important factors in a vehicle valuation:
Premium brands hold their value better
The lower, the more valuable
High-end features and a powerful engine increase the value
Body, engine and transmission are assessed individually

Yes. Rust from road salt, body damage or an engine that no longer starts after the cold season don’t rule out selling to us, and neither does an expired MFK (vehicle inspection). Describe the defects honestly and photograph them so that the offer is based on the actual condition and there are no surprises at the handover. You take the first step via the offer form.
We do. When a car is sold, the road traffic office of the canton of Glarus requires the vehicle registration document to be canceled; if no new car is registered within 14 days, the plates must also go back. We take care of both as soon as the car is sold, and the insurer is informed of the deposit automatically. Leave the plates on the car until the handover.
Yes, pro rata, but only on request. The tax is due on January 1 for the whole year. Once the plates have been handed in, it is no longer owed from the following day, and the office refunds the amount for the remaining days if you apply for it. Amounts under CHF 10 are not paid out, and the claim expires after three years. So don’t put off your application.
The office in Schwanden keeps deposited license plates for one year. If you’d like to keep your number longer, you can extend the period by another year for CHF 50. Without an extension, the office then reissues the plates, without notifying you. So if you’re attached to a particular number, keep an eye on the date. If you register another vehicle within two weeks, the plates move straight to it.
Yes, drivetrain and features are part of the valuation. In the canton of Glarus, more than half of the passenger cars newly registered in 2025 had all-wheel drive, so such a car is an everyday sight here. State in the form whether a second set of wheels is included, and photograph it too. You can get an initial guide value from our free vehicle valuation.
No. Whether the inspection is due or your car has already failed it: you’ll still get an offer, and you can skip presenting the car. If you have already reserved an appointment for the periodic inspection, you manage it online via the road traffic office’s Internet-Dispo. That way, the slot stays free for someone who needs it.
