Plates and tax: deregistration in Innerrhoden

The road traffic office of Appenzell Innerrhoden (Strassenverkehrsamt) has its counter and inspection center in the same place, at Brüggliweg 1 in Appenzell. The office accepts license plates there at any time, also by mail; you don’t have to return the vehicle registration document for this. Your liability insurance is suspended from the day after you hand them in or, if you send them by mail, from the day they arrive at the office. Deposited plates stay reserved for the registered keeper for twelve months; after that, they are issued again.

The motor vehicle tax has to be paid in advance for each calendar year; tax liability lasts until the day after the plates are returned. You get money back for the rest of the tax period, but only for plates that have been deposited at the road traffic office. The office deducts any credit from the next bill or, on request, transfers it to you.

As in the rest of the canton, it is deregistered at the road traffic office of Appenzell Innerrhoden in Appenzell, because that’s where your car with AI plates is registered. There is only one exception, for the vehicle inspection: passenger cars from Oberegg are inspected at the Ausserrhoden inspection center in Grub AR. Selling to us makes this appointment unnecessary, and we deposit the plates in Appenzell after the handover.

Is the road traffic office in Appenzell or the one in Trogen responsible for my car?

That depends on which canton your car is registered in. Cars with AI plates are handled by the road traffic office of Appenzell Innerrhoden at Brüggliweg 1 in Appenzell. Trogen, on the other hand, is home to the road traffic office of Appenzell Ausserrhoden, which is responsible for AR plates. Either way, we take care of the deregistration for you, no matter which side of the cantonal border you live on.

My car is already deregistered. Will you still buy it?

Yes. If you’ve already handed in the plates at the road traffic office in Appenzell, that’s not a problem; you keep the vehicle registration document, so just bring it along to the handover. Note in the form that the car is already deregistered and add how long it has been standing unused, so that we can assess its condition correctly.

What happens to my car insurance when I sell?
