Selling a used car in Bern: weight and energy label

In the canton of Bern, the tax for passenger cars is based on the gross weight in the vehicle registration document. Cars in energy efficiency category A receive a 40 percent reduction in the year they are first registered and the three following years, those in category B 20 percent. For purely electric cars, a lower base rate applies, and a reduction of 60 percent in these four years.

A heavy car therefore costs its registered keeper more each year in the canton than a light one. In a private sale, this can enter into the price negotiation. We still buy every car, from the economical small car to the large station wagon and the heavy all-wheel-drive vehicle. For our offer, what counts above all is mileage, maintenance and equipment: winter wheels, a tow bar, auxiliary heating or a complete service booklet therefore belong in your request, as do known defects.

My car won’t start anymore. Will you still buy it?

Yes. A car doesn’t have to be roadworthy for you to sell it to us. Describe in your request what doesn’t work and send photos of its condition as best you can. We also accept accident cars, cars with engine or transmission damage and those with an MFK due; for older models, we also check the export option. The offer takes the damage into account from the start.

Does the weight-based tax affect your offer?

Hardly. The Bern tax based on gross weight and the reduction for efficient cars concern the registered keeper as long as the car is registered in the canton. Our offer is based on make, model, year, mileage, condition and equipment. In a private sale, on the other hand, a high tax can put off interested buyers; this hurdle doesn’t exist when you sell to us.

Can I sell while a lease is still running?

Yes. Until the settlement, the car belongs to the leasing company, so we need the contract or a current settlement quote. We include the outstanding amount in the offer and clarify the settlement with the leasing company; if anything is left over afterward, it goes to you. How accurate is an offer based only on photos?

As accurate as your details. If the photos show all sides, the interior, the mileage and every dent up close, the price is fixed and won’t be renegotiated at the appointment. If, on the other hand, the car differs significantly from the description, for example because of undisclosed damage, we have to adjust the offer. So honest photos pay off for both sides.

Do you also buy in the Bernese Jura and the Oberland?
