Between Pilatus and the Brünig: selling your car made simple

Do you want to sell your car in Obwalden without a listing and without test drives with people you don’t know? Then enter your vehicle with us online, send a few photos and the vehicle registration document, and get a firm offer. Whether your home is on Lake Sarnen, in the Melchtal or in Engelberg: the process stays the same, and you don’t have to haggle over the price.

Obwalden is rural, but thanks to well-developed transport links such as the A8, it is close to Lucerne and Zurich. For many people here, the car is part of everyday life, and it has to handle a lot: the Brünig toward the Bernese Oberland is open all year, whereas the Glaubenberg into the Entlebuch is usually closed from November to April. If you drive around Obwalden, you know steep climbs, snowy roads and road salt – and that’s exactly what we look out for when we assess your car from the photos.

One Obwalden peculiarity is Engelberg: you can only reach this exclave by road and rail via Nidwalden. That makes no difference to the sale, because the same office is responsible for the whole canton, the Verkehrssicherheitszentrum Obwalden/Nidwalden. After the sale, we take care of everything for the deregistration there, and you don’t have to go to the counter in Sarnen or Stans. For your request, just have three things ready: the MFK notice, if the VSZ has already sent you one, photos of the winter wheels if they are included, and your decision on whether the OW plates should go on another vehicle in the future.

Car buying all over Obwalden: Sarneraatal and Engelberg

Whether Sarneraatal or Engelberg: cars from all seven municipalities of Obwalden are welcome. In the capital, Sarnen, which also includes Kägiswil, the VSZ has one of its two locations. Alpnach, with Alpnachstad at the foot of Mount Pilatus, lies on the A8 toward Lucerne. Sachseln, which also includes Flüeli-Ranft, borders directly on Lake Sarnen. Kerns, with the Melchtal, reaches far up into the mountains, and via Giswil and Lungern the road leads up to the Brünig, which is open all year. Finally, Engelberg lies behind Nidwalden as an exclave. From each of these places, we buy your car at a fixed price based on your photos.

VSZ OW/NW: deregistration, plates, motor vehicle tax and MFK

In Obwalden, the tasks of the road traffic office are carried out by the Verkehrssicherheitszentrum Obwalden/Nidwalden (VSZ OW/NW). It was created in 2003 from the two former offices and has locations in Sarnen and Stans. A car only counts as deregistered there once its plates have been deposited at the VSZ, and to take the car off the road, the VSZ also requires the original vehicle registration document. We take care of this for you after the handover. Your number then stays reserved for 24 months; your insurer is informed automatically. If you buy a new car, you can also use the plates for it; without a replacement vehicle, however, they may stay with you for no more than 14 days.

The VSZ calculates the motor vehicle tax by the day. It stops automatically when the plates are handed in, and any tax overpaid is refunded from that day – free of charges if the VSZ knows your bank or postal account number. Incidentally, the annual bill is dated January 31 and payable by the end of February; if you sell later in the year, you will usually already have paid for the whole calendar year. If you have already received a notice to appear for the periodic vehicle inspection, tell us the date: if the plates are in storage at the VSZ one week before the appointment or earlier, the inspection is dropped. An MFK that is due or expired is no obstacle to selling to us.

What you need for the sale

  • Original vehicle registration document (the VSZ needs it to take the car off the road)
  • Both license plates, unless they’re going on your next car
  • All keys and the service booklet
  • ID card or passport of the person the car is registered to
  • The MFK notice, if you have already received one
  • If leased: name of the leasing company

What determines the price of your car in Obwalden

In the Sarneraatal and in Engelberg, what counts is how a car copes with everyday mountain life. All-wheel drive, a second set of wheels with winter tires, a tow bar or a roof rack make a vehicle more attractive to its next owners. Mention such extras in your request and photograph them too; otherwise, they can’t be included in the valuation. Just as important is honest information about the traces left by pass roads and road salt: the more precisely you describe rust, brakes and tires, the more reliable our offer.

The Obwalden market is small, but the price doesn’t depend on demand in the valley alone. We value your car based on current market data from all over Switzerland and, for older vehicles with high mileage, also check whether they are in demand abroad. That way, even an aging second car or a car without a fresh MFK still has its price. We explain how this works with export on the page about selling your car for export.

You can also offer us a car that is still on a lease. Until the lease is settled, the leasing company remains the owner, which is why we need its name with your request. Our page on selling a leased car describes the process.

What determines the value of your car?

The most important factors in a vehicle valuation:

  • Make & model

Premium brands hold their value better

  • Mileage

    The lower, the more valuable

  • Features & engine

High-end features and a powerful engine increase the value

  • Technical condition

Body, engine and transmission are assessed individually

Frequently asked questions about selling your car in Obwalden

My car is registered in Engelberg. Does the same apply to me?

Yes. Engelberg belongs to Obwalden as an exclave, even though you can only reach it by road and rail via Nidwalden. So your car has OW plates, and as in the Sarneraatal, the Verkehrssicherheitszentrum Obwalden/Nidwalden is responsible. The request, firm offer and payment at the handover work exactly as in Sarnen or Lungern, and we also take care of the deregistration at the VSZ for you.

Who deregisters my car in Obwalden?

The Verkehrssicherheitszentrum Obwalden/Nidwalden, with locations in Sarnen and Stans, is responsible. We save you the trip there: we take care of the deregistration after the handover. If you want to keep the plates for a new car, that’s possible too – but without a replacement vehicle, you must deposit them at the VSZ within 14 days.

Do I get the motor vehicle tax back when I sell my car?

Yes. In Obwalden, the motor vehicle tax is calculated by the day and ends on the day the license plates are returned. The VSZ refunds the part you have overpaid for the current year from that date. This is free of charges to a bank or postal account if you give the VSZ your account number.

How long does my OW number stay reserved?

The VSZ holds deposited license plates for you for 24 months; your insurer is informed without you having to get in touch. If you later want to put the number back on a car, the VSZ charges a storage fee when you reclaim the plates. There are three ways to return them, namely at the counter, via the plate drop slot or by mail, and the plates must be clean and without frames. If you sell to us, we take care of it.

My car has an MFK notice from the VSZ. What now?

You don’t need the inspection to sell to us: we also buy cars with an MFK that is due or expired. One VSZ rule is important: if the plates are deposited at least one week beforehand, you no longer have to attend the inspection. So tell us the date when you request the offer. The VSZ also lets you postpone it up to seven days beforehand.

Should the winter wheels go with the car?

If you no longer need them: gladly. In a mountain canton like Obwalden, a second set of wheels is a real plus for the next owners. Mention it in your request and include a photo so that it goes into the valuation. You can read about what else shapes the value under Calculating car value.
