Deregistration in Basel-Stadt: that’s our job

You give us the vehicle registration document and BS plates at the handover, and from then on we take care of everything involved in the deregistration. Once it’s complete, we send you a confirmation. You can then use it to inform your insurance company.

To prepare, clear out the car, including the compartment under the trunk floor. Selling an electric or combustion-engine car in Basel: what the tax changes

Since 2018, Basel-Stadt has taxed passenger cars on their curb weight and CO2 emissions. Purely electric cars pay only on their curb weight and until now also received a 50 percent discount. This discount will no longer apply from January 1, 2027, because the share of electric cars in the vehicle fleet has exceeded the legal threshold of 5 percent. According to the canton, around 6.1 percent of passenger cars in Basel-Stadt are purely electric.

For someone taking over a car in Basel, weight and emissions therefore count toward the running costs. Does the end of the electric car discount change anything about your offer?

The Basel motor vehicle tax only affects whoever drives a car with BS plates. Our offer, on the other hand, is based on model, year, mileage, condition and equipment. In your request, state how many kilometers the car has been driven and whether the charging cable and accessories are complete.

How quickly do I get my money?

I’m moving away soon. How do I plan the sale?

It’s best to start your request as soon as your moving date is fixed. You get the offer based on your photos, and we arrange the appointment for the handover with you, for example shortly before the move. Until then, the car stays registered and you can use it. We take care of the deregistration afterward; you don’t need to be in Basel anymore for that.

My car has a dent and the MFK is due. Is it worth sending a request?

Yes. Minor damage, an MFK (vehicle inspection) that is due, accident damage or a car that no longer runs at all are no reason for us to turn it down. You don’t have to repair anything beforehand. Photograph the damage up close and describe it briefly; then the offer is realistic from the start, and nobody gets a surprise at the appointment.

What applies to a leased car?

You can sell a leased car to us too. Send the leasing contract or a current settlement quote with your request. We take the outstanding amount into account in the offer and handle the settlement with the leasing company; any surplus belongs to you. What is left for me to do after the sale?

Nothing. We take care of the deregistration completely for you once you have handed over the car, the vehicle registration document and the BS plates. You don’t have to attend an appointment or fill in a form. As soon as everything is done, we send you a confirmation. With it, you can inform your insurance company and close the car chapter in peace.

Does all this also apply in Riehen and Bettingen?

Yes, without any difference. Whether your car is registered in the city of Basel, in Riehen or in Bettingen changes neither the process nor the price.
