Selling a car in the canton of St. Gallen doesn’t have to mean waiting weeks for the right buyer. You get a firm offer from us as soon as you’ve sent the vehicle details, photos and the vehicle registration document. If your details are correct, that amount stands, and there is no renegotiation.
The canton stretches from Lake Constance to the Alps and borders Germany, Austria and Liechtenstein. Many people in St. Gallen live in the valleys: in the Rhine Valley, the Seeztal, the Linth plain and the Toggenburg. The A1 runs from Zurich via Wil and St. Gallen to St. Margrethen, where the A13 begins its route through the Rhine Valley toward Sargans and Chur; the A3 reaches Sargans along Lake Walen. The Wildhaus and Ricken passes are open all year.
For your sale, this means: whether your home is in the cantonal capital, the Toggenburg or the Sarganserland, the deregistration at the cantonal road traffic office is our job. So you don’t have to go to the head office on Frongartenstrasse or to one of the four inspection centers in Thal, Kaltbrunn, Mels or Oberbüren. All you have to do is send the request and a few photos and attend the handover.
Enter your vehicle details now and get an offer right away.

Enter your vehicle details in our online form. Your advantage: with just a few details, you get a very accurate initial offer (in practice often accurate to within +/- 1’000 CHF), because we use real market data.
Send us photos of your car and your vehicle registration document conveniently online. This allows a precise assessment without you losing time on appointments.
Based on your photos, you receive a firm, guaranteed offer – conveniently online, with no on-site viewing appointments. No renegotiation, 100% transparent.
We pay you the agreed price during the handover, by instant bank transfer. We then arrange the deregistration with the road traffic office.
Right at handover, with no waiting.
We transfer the purchase price during the handover itself. The money is usually in your account within seconds, secure and traceable.
For smaller amounts, for example for export vehicles, we can also pay in cash on request.
We buy St. Gallen cars from every region of the canton. Gossau and Wittenbach border directly on the city of St. Gallen, Rorschach lies on Lake Constance, and in the Wil region, with Uzwil and Flawil, one of the four inspection centers is in Oberbüren. In the Rhine Valley, with Altstätten and Widnau, the Rhine forms the border with Austria, and further up the Rhine, Buchs in Werdenberg lies opposite Liechtenstein. The Sarganserland, with Sargans and Mels, reaches as far as Lake Walen, and the Toggenburg around Wattwil reaches up to Wildhaus. And in See-Gaster, where the Kaltbrunn inspection center is located, Rapperswil-Jona lies on Lake Zurich.
Request an offer nowDeregistrations here are handled by the road traffic office of the canton of St. Gallen (Strassenverkehrs- und Schifffahrtsamt), with its head office at Frongartenstrasse 5 in St. Gallen and inspection centers in Thal (Buriet), Kaltbrunn, Mels and Oberbüren. License plates can be deposited at any time: at the plate administration counter, after the counters close via the plate drop slot in the inner courtyard of the head office, by mail or at the inspection centers, and in Kaltbrunn also via a drop slot. They must be handed in cleaned and without frames, screws or magnets; frames that have not been removed are destroyed. The number stays reserved free of charge for one year; after that, an automatically sent invoice for Fr. 50.– extends the reservation by another year. The office informs your liability insurer directly. If you sell to us, we take care of the deregistration.
The cantonal motor vehicle tax is owed in advance for each calendar year; the obligation ends on the day the plates are returned. The office credits taxes that are not owed and offsets them; on request, it pays them back, at the latest after two years. Since January 1, 2026, passenger cars have been taxed on gross weight and power. By the way: at the inspection centers, you can only pay fees by card or Twint; cash is accepted only at the head office.

Since 2026, a new ordinance on road traffic charges has applied in the canton of St. Gallen. Passenger cars in the best energy efficiency category get a 50 percent discount on the basic tax in the year of first registration and the three following years, and the second-best category 25 percent. Conversely, cars first registered before October 1, 2002, cars without an energy label or in the worst category pay 25 percent more, and the second-worst category 12.5 percent more.
For private buyers in the canton, a young, economical car is therefore cheaper to run, and an older or thirsty one more expensive. In a private sale, this can affect the search for prospective buyers. We, on the other hand, work with prices achieved all over Switzerland, and for older models we also consider export. If you often drive over the Ricken, to Wildhaus or into the Sarganserland, you should also state all-wheel drive, winter wheels and the condition of the brakes precisely.
The most important factors in a vehicle valuation:
Premium brands hold their value better
The lower, the more valuable
High-end features and a powerful engine increase the value
Body, engine and transmission are assessed individually

No. We also accept vehicles with an inspection that is due or was missed. If you still want to have it inspected beforehand, the Buriet (Thal), Kaltbrunn, Mels and Oberbüren inspection centers are open to you, where registration matters can also be handled. Tell us in your request the date of the last inspection and any outstanding defects, and our offer will be more accurate.
At the head office at Frongartenstrasse 5, after the counters close in the plate drop slot in the inner courtyard, by mail or at the counter of the Buriet, Mels and Oberbüren inspection centers, and in Kaltbrunn also via the drop slot. Remember to remove frames, screws and magnets. If you sell to us, you don’t have to worry about this, because we take care of the deregistration.
Since January 1, 2026, passenger cars in the canton of St. Gallen have been taxed on gross weight and power, with discounts for very efficient young cars and surcharges for older or inefficient ones. What matters most to you as the seller: as soon as the plates are back at the office, you no longer owe any tax, and anything overpaid is credited or, on request, paid back.
Yes. The car does belong to the leasing company until the contract is settled, but that’s exactly what happens as part of the sale. That’s why the leasing company and contract number belong in your request; both are also on the list of documents. Our article Sell a leased car shows you what other steps are involved.
Yes, after the deposit, the office holds your number free of charge for one year. After that, it automatically sends you an invoice for Fr. 50.–; if you pay it, the number stays reserved for another year. If a new car is already waiting, you transfer the plates straight to it and don’t need to deposit anything.
Yes. Cars first registered before October 1, 2002, or without an energy label have paid 25 percent more tax in the canton of St. Gallen since 2026, but you can still sell them. We also buy older vehicles and those without a valid MFK (vehicle inspection), and for them we also look at export. Our free valuation gives you a first impression of the value.
