The canton of Vaud stretches from Lake Geneva across the Mittelland to the Jura and the Vaud Alps, and its official language is French. If you want to sell your car here and would rather read English, you’ll soon come across unfamiliar terms: the road traffic office is called Service des automobiles et de la navigation (SAN), the cantonal motor vehicle tax taxe cantonale, the vehicle inspection expertise and the vehicle registration document permis de circulation.
That’s exactly the part we take off your hands. We take care of the deregistration at the SAN, so you don’t have to go to a counter or fill in any forms. You describe your car in our form, upload photos and get a firm offer for it, no matter whether it is registered in Lausanne, in the Gros-de-Vaud or in a village in the Jura-Nord vaudois.
Vaud has good road links, with the A1 between Geneva, Lausanne and Yverdon-les-Bains, the A9 toward Montreux and Valais and the A12 toward Fribourg. Most Jura and Alpine passes, such as the Marchairuz or the Col des Mosses, are also open all year. So if you live in the Vallée de Joux or the Pays-d’Enhaut, you drive over the mountain in winter too. That’s why you should mention all-wheel drive or a second set of wheels in your request; both go into the valuation.

Enter your vehicle details in our online form. Your advantage: with just a few details, you get a very accurate initial offer (in practice often accurate to within +/- 1’000 CHF), because we use real market data.
Send us photos of your car and your vehicle registration document conveniently online. This allows a precise assessment without you losing time on appointments.
Based on your photos, you receive a firm, guaranteed offer – conveniently online, with no on-site viewing appointments. No renegotiation, 100% transparent.
As soon as you hand us the keys, the purchase price goes to your account by instant bank transfer, or in cash for smaller amounts if you wish. We take the permis de circulation and plates for the deregistration at the SAN.
Right at handover, with no waiting.
We transfer the purchase price during the handover itself. The money is usually in your account within seconds, secure and traceable.
For smaller amounts, for example for export vehicles, we can also pay in cash on request.
We buy cars in every region of Vaud. On La Côte between Nyon, Gland and Morges, the A1 leads to Geneva and Lausanne; on the Riviera, the A9 connects Vevey, La Tour-de-Peilz and Montreux with the Chablais and Valais. Renens is part of the Ouest lausannois, and Pully lies between Lausanne and the Lavaux. Further north, Yverdon-les-Bains is the center of the Jura-Nord vaudois, and in the Broye, Payerne plays this role. Besides Lausanne, there are SAN centers in Nyon, Yverdon-les-Bains and Aigle, the main town of the Chablais vaudois. And your car is just as welcome from the Vallée de Joux or the Pays-d’Enhaut as from the city of Lausanne.
Request an offer nowIn the canton of Vaud, the Service des automobiles et de la navigation (SAN) is responsible, with centers in Lausanne, Aigle, Nyon and Yverdon-les-Bains. License plates can be returned at the counter of a post office in Vaud, at one of the four SAN centers or by mail; the SAN then informs the insurer of the deposit. The plates are kept for one year and then destroyed. If you want to reserve the number for longer, you have to apply every year and pay CHF 25 per additional year. If you register a new vehicle within 15 days, you can keep the plates instead of depositing them.
The taxe cantonale runs from registration until the plates are deposited or the vehicle registration document is canceled. For cars, it is charged per calendar year in proportion to the period of registration and is due on February 28; if the plates are deposited during the year, the canton refunds the overpaid part pro rata. Since January 1, 2024, the amount has depended on weight, power and CO₂ emissions (LTVB law). We take care of the deregistration, including returning the plates, for you.

Since 2024, the Vaud motor vehicle tax has rewarded low emissions and penalized high ones: low-emission passenger cars get a reduction of up to 90 percent, cars with high CO₂ emissions pay a surcharge of up to 50 percent, and if the emissions are not known, it’s 25 percent. Electric cars benefit from a 90 percent reduction; new electric cars first registered in Switzerland since January 1, 2024 are completely exempt from the tax for two years.
For someone who registers your car in Vaud, this makes a noticeable difference to the running costs. We still buy every car, from an economical small car to a large SUV, and work with prices from the Swiss market, not with the Vaud tax rates. In a canton with Jura and Alpine passes open all year, all-wheel drive and a second set of wheels are a real selling point. If your car has many years and high mileage behind it, it’s worth looking at export.
The most important factors in a vehicle valuation:
Premium brands hold their value better
The lower, the more valuable
High-end features and a powerful engine increase the value
Body, engine and transmission are assessed individually

No. At the handover, you give us the vehicle registration document and the license plates, and we take care of the rest at the SAN. The SAN then informs your insurer that the plates have been deposited. If you register a new car within 15 days, you can keep the plates; in that case, let us know before the handover.
Yes, pro rata. For cars, the Vaud motor vehicle tax is calculated per calendar year in proportion to the period of registration and is due on February 28. If the plates are deposited during the year, you get the overpaid part back pro rata. The earlier in the year the plates are at the SAN, the larger the amount you get back.
The SAN keeps deposited plates for one year and then destroys them. If the number is to stay reserved for longer, you have to apply every year and pay CHF 25 per additional year. If you’re planning a new car that you’ll register within 15 days, you can use the plates on it directly without depositing them.
Hardly, if you sell to us. You fill in the form on our website, and we take care of the deregistration and the return of the plates at the SAN. The pro rata refund of the taxe cantonale goes to you. If you’d still like to look up the terms, you’ll find the most important ones in the introduction above, from permis de circulation to expertise.
If you sell to us, it isn’t necessary; an inspection that is due won’t stop us from buying. If you sell privately, it builds trust: the SAN offers voluntary checks at any time and explicitly mentions the case “before the sale of the vehicle”. Inspections take place in Lausanne, Aigle, Nyon (only vehicles up to 3’500 kg) and Yverdon-les-Bains, and the invoice follows by mail after the check.
Yes. The surcharge on the Vaud tax only affects whoever has the car registered in the canton; for our offer, on the other hand, the overall Swiss market counts. So a large engine is no reason to turn a car down; what matters are age, mileage, condition and features. Our free valuation shows you how to estimate the value in advance.
