South of the Alps: selling your car in Ticino made easy

We buy cars south of the Alps too. If you’d like to sell your car in Ticino, you fill in our form, send photos and the licenza di circolazione, in other words the vehicle registration document, and get a binding price from us. You’re spared listings and unreliable prospective buyers. Whether you live in Lugano, Locarno or up in the Leventina: the price in the offer is the price you get.

This page and our form are in English. The cantonal road traffic authority, the Sezione della circolazione in Camorino, on the other hand, communicates in Italian. To help you find your way around anyway, here are the most important Italian terms: license plates are “targhe”, the motor vehicle tax is called “imposta di circolazione” and the MFK (vehicle inspection) is “collaudo”. We take care of the deregistration for you anyway.

The main routes are two motorways: the A2 from the Gotthard via Bellinzona and Lugano to Chiasso, and the A13 from the San Bernardino to Bellinzona. The Gotthard and San Bernardino passes are usually closed from November to May, the Nufenen even until June; the Lukmanier stays open all year, and in winter north–south traffic runs through the road tunnels. In the south, Ticino borders Italy along a long stretch, and the motorway border crossing is at Chiasso-Brogeda on the A2.

Car buying in Ticino: Sopraceneri, Sottoceneri and the valleys

We buy Ticino cars both north and south of Monte Ceneri. In the Sottoceneri, Lugano with Massagno and Capriasca is the center, the Malcantone lies to the west, and the Mendrisiotto with Mendrisio, Chiasso and Stabio borders Italy. The Sopraceneri is home to the capital, Bellinzona, where the A13 from the San Bernardino meets the A2. The Locarnese, with Locarno, Minusio, Losone and Ascona, reaches Lake Maggiore, and Gambarogno lies on the opposite shore. To the north come the Riviera with Biasca and the Leventina up to Airolo at the foot of the Gotthard, plus the side valleys of Blenio, Maggia and Verzasca. We buy your car from any of these regions.

Sezione della circolazione: deregistration, targhe and imposta di circolazione

In Ticino, the responsible office is the Sezione della circolazione of the Dipartimento delle istituzioni, based in Camorino. The vehicle registration document is called “licenza di circolazione” here, or “carta grigia” for short. Depositing the targhe suspends the insurance cover and the motor vehicle tax. You can hand in the plates free of charge at the counter, in the mailbox outside the office or by mail, clean and without frames or screws; if you send them by mail, the day they arrive at the office counts. If the car is no longer to be registered in your name, the licenza di circolazione is canceled. The number stays reserved for 12 months and can be extended by another 12 months using a form, for a fee. When you sell to us, we take all this off your hands.

The imposta di circolazione is charged by the day: 1/365 of the annual tax per day until the end of the calendar year. For every day your car is off the road, you get the same share back. The canton sends the annual bill at the start of the year, by around January 20. Since 2024, the tax for passenger cars has been based on unladen weight and power, weighted with a factor for each fuel type. The official inspection, the collaudo, is carried out by the Ufficio tecnico in Camorino and also by the TCS technical center in Rivera.

What you need for the sale

  • Licenza di circolazione (vehicle registration document)
  • Both targhe, clean and without frames or screws
  • Keys and service records, as complete as possible
  • Latest collaudo inspection report, if available
  • Official photo ID
  • If leased: details of the leasing company

Selling a used car in Ticino: what influences the price

Since 2024, the canton has calculated the motor vehicle tax for passenger cars based on unladen weight and power, weighted with a factor for each fuel type. For a buyer in Ticino, a heavy, powerful car is therefore more expensive to run than a light small car. In a private sale within the canton, this can help determine how quickly a buyer is found. We, on the other hand, value cars for the entire Swiss market, and for older cars, selling abroad is also an option.

How the car was driven also counts. If you mostly drive around the Lugano urban area, you put different strain on the brakes and clutch than someone who drives up the Leventina or into the Vallemaggia every day, including through snow in winter. So tell us about features such as four-wheel drive or a second set of wheels, as well as the service status, and photograph defects openly. That way, our offer will be reliable even though we haven’t seen your car beforehand.

What determines the value of your car?

The most important factors in a vehicle valuation:

  • Make & model

Premium brands hold their value better

  • Mileage

    The lower, the more valuable

  • Features & engine

High-end features and a powerful engine increase the value

  • Technical condition

Body, engine and transmission are assessed individually

Selling your car in Ticino: answers to frequently asked questions

Do I have to take the plates to Camorino?

No. We take care of the deregistration at the Sezione della circolazione after you’ve handed the car over to us. If you deposit plates yourself, you can hand them in at the counter in Camorino, put them in the mailbox outside the office or send them by mail, clean and without frames or screws. Depositing them is free of charge; if you send them by mail, the day the targhe arrive at the office counts.

What do licenza di circolazione, targhe and collaudo mean?

The licenza di circolazione, called “carta grigia” in everyday use, is the vehicle registration document. Targhe are the license plates, and the collaudo is the official vehicle inspection, known as the MFK in German-speaking Switzerland. It is carried out by the Ufficio tecnico of the Sezione della circolazione in Camorino or at the TCS technical center in Rivera. We don’t require a fresh collaudo when we buy your car.

Do I get the imposta di circolazione back?

Yes, to the day. The Ticino motor vehicle tax is calculated at 1/365 of the annual tax per day, and for every day the car is off the road, you get the same share back. What counts is the deposit of the plates, which also suspends the insurance cover.

My collaudo is coming up soon. Do I still have to keep the appointment?

No, at least not for us: a collaudo that is due is no obstacle to our purchase. If you need some time, you can postpone the inspection appointment online. Mention the notice and any known defects in your request so that our offer reflects the condition correctly. Our free valuation gives you an initial estimate of the value in its current condition.

Can I sell a car with a lease agreement in Ticino?

Yes. Until the end of the contract, the leasing company is the owner, so the lease is settled when you sell. State in your request which company your contract is with and how long it still runs. Our guide Sell a leased car describes exactly how the settlement works.

How long does my Ticino number stay reserved?

After the deposit, the targhe stay reserved for you for 12 months. If you’d like to keep the number longer, you extend the reservation by another 12 months using a form from the Sezione della circolazione, for a fee. If you already have a new car, the plates go straight onto that vehicle, and no deposit is needed.

Across the cantonal border: Ticino’s neighboring cantons

On the Swiss side, Ticino borders three cantons; you’ll find a separate page for each of them here.
