Deregistration in Aargau: registration document, plates and motor vehicle tax

Deregistration is handled by the road traffic office of the canton of Aargau (Strassenverkehrsamt), which has its head office, counter hall and inspection center in Schafisheim. According to the office, if you sell, you should have the vehicle registration document canceled before the new registered keeper takes over the car. You can do this at the counter in Schafisheim with no counter fee, or by mail using the form “Gesuch um Annullation eines Fahrzeugausweises / Schildereinlagerungsauftrag” (application to cancel a vehicle registration document / order to store the plates). The plates must be returned once 14 days have passed without another vehicle being registered with them; there is no extension of this deadline, and a withdrawal would come with a fee.

Aargau bills the motor vehicle tax annually in advance, for the whole calendar year. When the plates are returned or deposited, charges that have been paid but not yet used up are credited or refunded. Your liability insurer is notified automatically; the road traffic office nevertheless recommends that you also inform it yourself.

Since the start of 2026, a new motor vehicle tax has applied in Aargau: passenger cars are taxed on gross weight and rated power, no longer on engine displacement. According to the canton, this changes the amount for most registered keepers. Pure electric and hydrogen cars get deductions of 20 percent on weight and 30 percent on power, plug-in hybrids 10 and 15 percent respectively. The new law provides for no other discounts or surcharges.

For the next registered keeper of your car, this means: in Aargau, a heavy, powerful model costs more tax every year than a light, less powerful one. Do I have to go to Schafisheim myself to deregister the car?

No, that’s not necessary. The plates stay on the car until the handover so that it can still be driven. Afterward, we have the vehicle registration document canceled at the road traffic office of the canton of Aargau, return the plates and send you the confirmation. It’s best to inform your insurer only once the deregistration is complete; that way there is no gap in your insurance cover.

By when do I have to sell so that no motor vehicle tax is due in Aargau for the next year?

What counts is the return of the plates: if they are deposited by January 5, no tax is due for the new year. The canton usually sends the bill for it at the end of October or the beginning of November, payable by the end of December. If you have already paid, the money isn’t lost, because charges not yet used up are credited or paid back after the plates have been returned.

My car is inspected in Münchenstein or Steinhausen. Does that change anything about the sale?

No. Depending on the inspection region, Aargau vehicle inspections also take place at the AGVS test centers in Kleindöttingen and Zofingen, for the lower Fricktal in Münchenstein, and for Muri and the Kelleramt at the Zug road traffic office in Steinhausen. But that only concerns the inspection: your car is registered with the road traffic office of the canton of Aargau, and that’s where we deregister it after the handover. And if the next inspection is coming up, selling to us makes it unnecessary.

My car is still on a lease. Can I sell it?

Yes. Until the lease is paid off, the car legally belongs to the leasing company, but you can still sell it. What happens to my Aargau license plate number?

You have a say in that. Without a storage order, returned plates are recycled in Aargau; however, you keep your right to the same number for one year, and the plates are then made again. If they are to be deposited, they get a red dot before they go into the drop box, and they stay reserved for twelve months. Tell us before the handover which option you want.
