Deregistration at the ASSV: plates, tax and inspection in Uri

In Uri, the responsible office is the Amt für Strassen- und Schiffsverkehr (ASSV), the cantonal road traffic office, on Gotthardstrasse in Altdorf. License plates can be deposited there at any time, without plate frames and cleaned. Deposited plates stay reserved for the previous registered keeper for one year. If you want to register the number again later, you only get the plates back at the counter in exchange for a valid electronic proof of insurance that is no more than 30 days old.

The Uri motor vehicle tax is based on the gross weight in the vehicle registration document and has to be paid in advance for the whole calendar year. It is owed up to and including the day the plates are returned; from the following day, the amount paid is credited or refunded on request. If less than CHF 10 remains after deducting the administrative fee, you get nothing back. A detail for everyone with a notice for the periodic inspection: if the plates are deposited at the ASSV at least 5 business days before the appointment, the obligation to present the car no longer applies, and the notice becomes invalid. Selling a used car in Uri: what matters for the price

Uri is a mountain canton. If you live in the Urserntal, the Schächental or above the valley floor, you need a car that gets through reliably in winter and can handle the Furka, Susten or Klausen in summer. All-wheel drive, a second set of wheels with winter tires or a parking heater are therefore among the points you should definitely mention in your request, because they go into our valuation.

At the same time, mountain roads leave their mark. Long descents put strain on the brakes and clutch, and winter roads take their toll on the underbody. Questions from Uri about car buying

I’ve already received an MFK (vehicle inspection) notice from the ASSV. Do I still have to go before the sale?

Not necessarily. If the license plates are deposited at the ASSV at least 5 business days before the inspection appointment, the obligation to present the car no longer applies, and the notice becomes invalid. So tell us the date right away in your request. If time gets tight, you can postpone appointments for passenger cars with the ASSV online. By the way: an inspection that is due is no reason for us not to buy your car.

How do I get the Uri motor vehicle tax back?

The tax is paid in advance for the whole year, but it is only owed up to and including the day the plates are returned to the ASSV. From the following day, the ASSV credits the amount to you or pays it back on request. If less than CHF 10 remains after deducting the administrative fee, nothing is refunded. Because the tax is based on gross weight, more money is at stake with heavy cars.

Do I have to clean the UR plates and remove the frame before returning them?

The ASSV rule is: license plates are only accepted for deposit without plate frames and cleaned. If we buy your car, we take care of this and hand in the plates in Altdorf; you give them to us together with the vehicle registration document. If you’re attached to a particular frame, unscrew it beforehand and keep it for your next car.

Can I keep my UR number for my next car?

Yes. Deposited plates stay reserved for you at the ASSV for one year, after which the reservation ends. For re-registration, the office only releases the plates at the counter in exchange for a valid electronic proof of insurance that is no more than 30 days old. Your insurer issues this proof as soon as you insure the new car with them.

Do you also buy cars that show the marks of Uri winters?

Yes. Mountain roads and winter driving leave their mark, for example on the underbody, brakes or clutch, and that’s normal in a mountain canton. Show such spots openly in the photos and describe them in the form; then the condition is already reflected in the offer, and nobody gets a nasty surprise at the handover. We’re also happy to value a car with rust or an overdue service; what matters is that your details are correct.
