Gearbox damage or just the clutch?

Want to sell a car with gearbox damage? Then one question is worth asking first: is it really the gearbox? The word comes up quickly as soon as a car no longer shifts cleanly or no longer gets its power to the wheels. Very different defects can be behind it, from a worn clutch to a destroyed gear set, and depending on which it is, a buyer calculates very differently.

First, it depends on what is installed in your car. In a manual gearbox, a friction clutch connects the engine and the gearbox; it is a wear part and not part of the gearbox itself. The classic automatic works with a torque converter, the dual-clutch gearbox with two clutches and two sub-gearboxes, the automated manual gearbox with actuators that operate the clutch and shift gears, and the continuously variable CVT with adjustable conical pulleys instead of fixed gears. According to the TCS, people who drive without a clutch pedal often don’t know exactly which system is in their car, because the selector levers all look similar.

Typical signs, depending on the type: gears are hard to engage or jump out, there is crunching or grinding when shifting, the revs rise without the car going faster, the automatic shifts jerkily, with a delay or gets stuck in one gear, oil collects under the car. If the red gearbox warning light stays on, the car belongs in the garage according to the TCS, so that no consequential damage occurs.

    Vehicle handover & payment

Whether your car still rolls or no longer accepts any gear makes no difference for the handover; we plan it with you after you have accepted. If the condition and the defect match your description at the handover, we pay the agreed price by instant bank transfer, and small sums in cash on request. We save you the trip to the road traffic office for the deregistration.

How you get your money

Instant bank transfer Recommended

We transfer the purchase price during the handover itself. The money is usually in your account within seconds, secure and traceable.

Cash payment

For smaller amounts, for example for export vehicles, we can also pay in cash on request.

Why the exact diagnosis determines the price

What counts for the price is not the term “gearbox damage”, but the component behind it. Without a diagnosis, a buyer plays it safe and assumes the most expensive case: replacing the entire unit. If, on the other hand, it is clear that only the clutch is worn, the control unit is failing or a bearing is making noise, the calculation can be more precise. A useful garage report therefore states the type of gearbox, the affected component, the fault codes read out, the condition of the gearbox oil and whether the car still runs.

With this report, you have three options: repair the defective component, have a rebuilt or used gearbox installed, or sell the car as it is. For the first two, get a written cost estimate and compare it with the value your car would have without the defect; which factors determine this value is explained under calculating your car’s value. If less of this value remains after deducting the repair costs than you would get for the defective car today, the matter is settled.

In the sales contract, record what you know and nothing more. If no garage has looked at the car, describe the symptoms instead of claiming a diagnosis. Concealing what you know can be expensive: an exclusion of the warranty does not apply to defects that were fraudulently concealed (Art. 199 CO). You’ll find a checklist for the contract in the guide on the sales contract.

These details make the offer more accurate

  • Type of gearbox, if known: manual, torque converter automatic, dual-clutch or CVT
  • What exactly happens: in which gears, cold or warm, since when
  • Garage report with fault codes, if available
  • Whether the car still runs and which gears can be engaged
  • Receipts for gearbox oil changes or clutch replacement
  • Photo of the warning message on the dashboard

Parts donor or repair case: the market for cars with gearbox damage

In Switzerland, cars stay on the road for a long time: according to the 2025 annual report of the Stiftung Auto Recycling Schweiz, the average age is 10.8 years, and vehicles are only scrapped after around 20 years. Used spare parts make sense especially for older vehicles, the foundation notes; car recyclers remove them, test them and give a warranty on them. Your car is therefore two things: a parts donor for the engine, axles, doors or electronics and, with a suitable used gearbox, a car that can run again.

Then there is demand abroad. In 2025, passenger cars from Switzerland went to 126 countries, most often to Serbia, Poland and Libya. Car buyers with access to such markets consider what a car will bring in there in running order and what the repair beforehand will cost. That is why a car with a gearbox defect is more likely to find a commercial buyer than a private one. We explain how selling for export works on a separate page.

What determines the value of your car?

The most important factors in a vehicle valuation:

  • Make & model

Premium brands hold their value better

  • Mileage

    The lower, the more valuable

  • Features & engine

High-end features and a powerful engine increase the value

  • Technical condition

Body, engine and transmission are assessed individually

Questions about selling a car with gearbox damage

How can I tell whether the clutch or the gearbox is defective?

Only a garage can say for sure. One clue with a manual: if the revs rise when you accelerate without the car going faster, the clutch is usually slipping. If individual gears crunch when engaged or jump out, the gearbox itself is the more likely suspect. With automatics and dual-clutch gearboxes, the clutches, the control unit or the oil can be affected. So ask explicitly which component is meant when someone talks about gearbox damage.

May I still drive with gearbox damage?

Better not. According to the TCS, if the gearbox warning light stays on, the car should be checked at a garage to avoid consequential damage. Every additional kilometer can make the defect worse and thus also lower the value. Then there is the law: vehicles may only be driven on the road in a safe operating condition (Art. 29 SVG). Whether a car that suddenly loses drive or no longer stays in gear meets this requirement is more than questionable.

Repair the gearbox, replace it or sell the car?

First clarify whether a partial repair is enough, for example to the clutch or the control unit. If the entire gearbox is affected, you can choose between an overhaul, an exchange gearbox or a tested used part. Get written quotes for the options with price and warranty. The older the car and the higher the mileage, the less likely you are to recoup the expense. An offer for the car with the defect gives you the figure to compare.

What do I have to tell the buyer if I don’t know the cause?

Everything you know, and nothing you only suspect. Describe the symptoms as they occur and attach reports or invoices if a garage has worked on the car. Don’t give any assurance you can’t back up, because the seller is liable for assured characteristics (Art. 197 CO). Conversely, you are not liable for a defect the buyer already knew about at the time of purchase (Art. 200 CO). An exact description therefore protects you above all.

What is a car with gearbox damage still worth?

That depends on three things: the value of the car without the defect, the type of damage and how well it is documented. A worn clutch weighs less heavily than a destroyed automatic. General guide values would be guesswork, because gearboxes and labor vary greatly from model to model. You get a concrete figure when you submit the car with a description and photos; the offer costs nothing and doesn’t bind you.

Do I need a garage report to get an offer?

No. For the offer, your details in the form, informative photos and a picture of the vehicle registration document are enough. A report is still worthwhile if the garage has already looked at the car anyway: it shows which component is affected and removes the buyer’s uncertainty. Without a report, an exact description helps, together with a photo of the warning message on the dashboard and whether the car can still be moved.
