Many kilometers, few interested buyers: why that is

If you want to sell a high-mileage car, you have usually commuted long distances, driven a lot as a field sales rep or covered long vacation routes with the family. Age is secondary here: even a five-year-old station wagon can have 180’000 km on the clock. That doesn’t have to mean anything bad for the mechanics. In its guide to buying a used car, the TCS notes that mileages of more than 150’000 km are no longer a problem with today’s technology.

Nevertheless, listings for such cars often struggle to find a buyer, and there are two reasons for this. The first is the search filter: on listing platforms, interested buyers set an upper limit for the mileage and like to choose a round number for it. Anything just above it doesn’t even show up in their results – even if it hardly differs from the car just below it. The second is the fear of repairs: according to the TCS, a buyer rarely gets a guarantee from a private individual, so they factor the risk into their bid or keep looking.

You can influence three things: how well the kilometers are documented, how openly you describe the condition and who you sell to. A car with many but properly documented kilometers is easier to assess than one with an empty service booklet – and a car buyer who assesses such cars every day calculates differently from someone looking for a single family car.

Selling despite high mileage: the four steps

  1. 1

    Request a non-binding offer

Enter your vehicle details in our online form. Your advantage: with just a few details, you get a very accurate initial offer (in practice often accurate to within +/- 1’000 CHF), because we use real market data.

  2. 2

Send photos & vehicle registration document

Send us photos of your car and your vehicle registration document conveniently online. This allows a precise assessment without you losing time on appointments.

  3. 3

    Get a guaranteed offer

Based on your photos, you receive a firm, guaranteed offer – conveniently online, with no on-site viewing appointments. No renegotiation, 100% transparent.

  4. 4

    Vehicle handover & payment

The handover includes a look at the odometer: mileage and condition must match your details. Then the agreed amount stands, you sign the sales contract, and we initiate the instant bank transfer. Hand over the service booklet, invoices and all keys. You save yourself the trip to the road traffic office: the deregistration is included.

How you get your money

Instant bank transfer Recommended

We transfer the purchase price during the handover itself. The money is usually in your account within seconds, secure and traceable.

Cash payment

For smaller amounts, for example for export vehicles, we can also pay in cash on request.

What buyers check instead of the bare number

Anyone assessing a high-mileage used car asks three questions. First: is the maintenance documented? According to the TCS, the service booklet shows whether a car has been maintained without gaps, and that is worth a lot when reselling. Many brands now keep it digitally; you can request an extract at any time. Second: how were the kilometers covered – on long journeys, in short-distance driving, with a trailer? Towing vehicles, for example, have often been put under heavy strain, according to the TCS. Third: which major jobs have been done? The TCS buyer’s checklist asks whether all services were carried out according to the maintenance schedule and whether an expensive timing belt change is coming up. An invoice for the timing belt, clutch or brakes answers exactly that.

You must state the mileage itself truthfully. Anyone who turns it back or knowingly states it too low to get a higher price risks a conviction for fraud (Art. 146 of the Swiss Criminal Code: imprisonment of up to five years or a monetary penalty). The Federal Supreme Court upheld the conviction for commercial fraud of a dealer who had turned back the odometer on 23 used cars and sold them with the false reading (BGE 119 IV 129). You can prove your mileage with service entries and garage invoices that state the date and kilometers. If the instrument cluster was replaced, state the actual total mileage and show the invoice for it.

And should you invest beforehand? A wash, a clean interior and organized records cost little. Better not to have expensive work done just in case: you’ll only see whether it pays off once an offer for the current condition is on the table.

These records and details help

  • Photo of the odometer showing the current mileage
  • Service booklet; if it is kept digitally, the printout from the garage
  • Invoices for major work such as the timing belt, clutch or brakes
  • Report of the last MFK
  • Use: long distances, short trips, towing, number of registered keepers
  • Known defects, warning lights, replaced instrument cluster

Who buys cars with high mileage – and why export matters

On the private used car market, high-mileage cars have a hard time. Anyone without their own workshop can hardly assess wear, and the TCS advises caution with older diesels, all-wheel-drive cars and automatics with very high mileage. It is easier for professionals who inspect and repair cars themselves and for dealers with buyers abroad.

How big this second market is can be read in the 2025 annual report of the Stiftung Auto Recycling Schweiz: 154’315 passenger cars were exported that year, and Serbia was by far the top destination, ahead of Poland and Libya. According to the report, a large share of the vehicles therefore leave Switzerland as used cars, not as scrap. A car that hardly anyone here responds to because of its mileage is therefore far from the end of its road. We, too, buy cars that go for export. What you need to know as a seller: Sell your car for export.

What determines the value of your car?

The most important factors in a vehicle valuation:

  • Make & model

Premium brands hold their value better

  • Mileage

    The lower, the more valuable

  • Features & engine

High-end features and a powerful engine increase the value

  • Technical condition

Body, engine and transmission are assessed individually

Many kilometers, many questions: our answers

How many kilometers count as a lot for a car?

There is no official threshold. What matters is the relation to age, vehicle class and drive: the same number can be a lot for a three-year-old small car and little for a ten-year-old touring station wagon. The TCS writes in its guide that more than 150’000 km are no longer a problem with today’s technology. What you notice more are the round upper limits that interested buyers enter in their search: if your car is just above one, the listing is found less often. If your car is old rather than high-mileage, read the page Sell an old car.

How much is a car with 200’000 km still worth?

There is no figure that applies to all cars, so we won’t name one here. The value depends on the model, engine, equipment, documented maintenance and condition – and on whether there are buyers for exactly this car in Switzerland or abroad. Two cars with the same mileage can therefore be far apart. You find out the concrete figure via the form: the offer is free, and you decide freely afterwards. You can read which factors count and how much under What determines a used car’s value.

Do I have to state the mileage exactly?

Yes. State the reading that is on the odometer today and don’t round it down. A deliberately false statement that gets you a higher price can be punished as fraud under Art. 146 SCC. If the display differs from the actual mileage, for example after the instrument cluster was replaced, add a note about it. The service booklet, invoices stating the mileage and the extract from the digital service booklet serve as proof: according to the TCS, tampering is noticed when the odometer reading doesn’t match the data stored at every service.

Service due: have it done first or sell as is?

You don’t have to catch up on it. Work before the sale only pays off if it increases the proceeds by more than it costs, and with expensive items such as the timing belt, clutch or gearbox, that is far from certain. So first get the price for the current condition; with us, none of this work is a requirement for an offer. If a service is due anyway, just mention it. Little effort and always worthwhile: washing the car, cleaning the interior and getting the documents ready.

What if the service booklet is missing or has gaps?

Then gather what there is: garage invoices, MFK reports, receipts for tires, brakes or the timing belt. If the brand keeps a digital service booklet, you can request an extract at any time, according to the TCS; ask the garage that maintained the car. Mention gaps openly – the TCS counts the supposedly lost service booklet among the tricks of dishonest sellers, and buyers react with corresponding suspicion. With us, you get an offer even with incomplete documents.

Do you also buy cars with over 300’000 km or without a valid MFK?

Yes, neither is an obstacle. Very high mileage, an expired MFK, engine or gearbox damage: you get an offer from us for these too, for any brand. Your car doesn’t have to be roadworthy; we agree on the time of the handover with you once you have accepted the offer. What matters is that the mileage, defects and previous damage in your details are correct, because then there is no renegotiation. More on the missing inspection: Selling a car without MFK.
