Sell your VW: around one in eight passenger cars is a Volkswagen

If you want to sell your VW, you’re in plenty of company. According to the Federal Statistical Office, 613’693 Volkswagens were registered as passenger cars in Switzerland on September 30, 2025, 12.7 percent of the entire vehicle stock and more than of any other brand. The cars in question are correspondingly varied: the Polo as a second car, the Golf Variant with a tow bar, the Tiguan coming off a lease, the family’s Touran or an ID.4.

Their age also varies widely. Just under half of these VWs are ten years old or older, and 6’136, at 50 years or more, have long been classic cars. At the other end are 23’574 fully electric Volkswagens. So there is neither one VW price nor one right way: a twelve-year-old Golf TDI with 220’000 kilometers is valued differently from a two-year-old T-Roc whose factory warranty is just running out.

For an offer, you neither have to recondition the car nor show it. You enter the model, model year, mileage, engine and equipment in the form and then send photos and the vehicle registration document. On this basis, you receive a fixed amount that applies at the handover if your details are correct. The more precisely you describe the engine, drive and condition, the closer even the first offer is to the final one.

Enter your vehicle details now and get an offer right away.

How we buy your VW in four steps

  1. 1

    Request a non-binding offer

Enter your vehicle details in our online form. Your advantage: with just a few details, you get a very accurate initial offer (in practice often accurate to within +/- 1’000 CHF), because we use real market data.

  2. 2

Send photos & vehicle registration document

Send us photos of your car and your vehicle registration document conveniently online. This allows a precise assessment without you losing time on appointments.

  3. 3

    Get a guaranteed offer

Based on your photos, you receive a firm, guaranteed offer – conveniently online, with no on-site viewing appointments. No renegotiation, 100% transparent.

  4. 4

    Vehicle handover & payment

At the handover, we compare your VW with the details and photos: mileage, equipment, condition and number of keys. If everything matches, you receive the agreed amount by instant bank transfer. Hand over the service booklet, a second set of wheels if you have one and, with an ID. model, the charging cables. We take care of the deregistration at the road traffic office for you.

How you get your money

Right at handover, with no waiting.

Instant bank transfer Recommended

We transfer the purchase price during the handover itself. The money is usually in your account within seconds, secure and traceable.

Cash payment

For smaller amounts, for example for export vehicles, we can also pay in cash on request.

What determines the price of a used VW

Very different cars are behind a model name like Golf or Tiguan. Volkswagen Schweiz currently offers the Golf as Trend, Life, Style and R-Line, as well as GTI, GTE and R; on older used cars, the trim levels are called Comfortline or Highline. For the engine, TSI stands for gasoline, TDI for diesel, eTSI for the mild hybrid and eHybrid for the plug-in hybrid; for the gearbox, DSG stands for the dual-clutch automatic. The all-wheel drive is called 4MOTION; in the ID.4 GTX, two electric motors provide it.

All-wheel drive is no side issue in this country: according to auto-schweiz, more than one in two new passenger cars in 2025 was a 4×4. So enter exactly what your VW has, because a Tiguan 2.0 TDI 4MOTION with DSG is a different car from a Tiguan 1.5 TSI with front-wheel drive.

Then there is the car’s history. Volkswagen gives a two-year warranty on new cars, provided that all service work was carried out according to the manufacturer’s specifications. According to the warranty terms of Volkswagen Schweiz, when the car is sold, the new owner takes the place of the previous one; the same applies accordingly to Garantie+, which can extend the cover to up to five years and 150’000 kilometers. For the high-voltage battery of the ID. models and the plug-in hybrids, eight years or 160’000 kilometers apply. A running warranty and fully documented services therefore belong in the form.

What to enter in the form for a VW

  • Engine and gearbox: TSI, TDI, eTSI or eHybrid, manual or DSG
  • Drive: front-wheel drive or 4MOTION
  • Trim level and extras such as a tow bar, auxiliary heating or panoramic roof
  • Service booklet or service records with date and mileage
  • Running factory warranty or Garantie+ with expiry date
  • Known defects, accident damage, last MFK (vehicle inspection)

Selling a used VW: figures on the Swiss market

Volkswagen is also number one for new cars. According to auto-schweiz, 25’607 new VWs were registered in 2025, 11.0 percent of all passenger cars; according to the importer AMAG, this made VW the country’s best-selling brand for the 27th year in a row. With 5’181 registrations, the Tiguan topped the model ranking across all brands. It was followed at VW by the Golf (3’985), the Polo (2’338), the T-Roc (1’775) and the ID.3 (1’619).

Adding up the annual statistics from 2015 to 2025 gives around 72’000 new Golfs, 58’000 Tiguans and 45’000 Polos. If you sell one of these models, you face many comparable offers; that makes condition, mileage and equipment all the more important. In addition, one in three VWs on the road runs on diesel (205’276 vehicles). If yours already has a lot of kilometers on the clock, you’ll find the essentials on the page Sell a high-mileage car.

What determines the value of your car?

The most important factors in a vehicle valuation:

  • Make & model

Premium brands hold their value better

  • Mileage

    The lower, the more valuable

  • Features & engine

High-end features and a powerful engine increase the value

  • Technical condition

Body, engine and transmission are assessed individually

Frequently asked questions about selling your VW

What is my VW still worth?

That depends on the model, model year, mileage, engine, drive, trim level and condition – a Golf Trend with a manual gearbox is valued differently from a Golf R-Line with DSG. A reliable figure is therefore only possible with your data: in the form, you get an initial offer, and after the photos and the vehicle registration document, the firm one. The guide What determines a used car’s value explains how the individual factors work.

Do you also buy an old VW with high mileage, without an MFK or with engine damage?

Yes. Just under half of all VWs in Switzerland are ten years old or older, so such cars are part of everyday life. We also buy VWs with high mileage, an expired MFK, accident damage, gearbox damage or engine damage. Describe the condition in the form as it is, and it will already be taken into account in the firm offer. Your VW doesn’t have to be roadworthy for this. We plan the handover with you once you have said yes to the offer.

Can I sell my leased VW?

Yes, but not on your own. If the contract is with AMAG Leasing, the car remains its property for the entire term according to its general leasing terms. Contracts subject to the Consumer Credit Act can be terminated in writing with at least 30 days’ notice to the end of any three-month leasing period; the installments are then recalculated retroactively according to the table in the contract. So what matters is whether our offer is above the amount the leasing company still demands. The page Sell a leased car describes the process.

Does the VW warranty pass to the next owner when I sell?

Yes. In the warranty terms published by Volkswagen Schweiz, the warrantor expressly agrees to the new purchaser taking over the warranty agreement. The new purchaser can assert the rights to the extent that they exist at the time of the sale. The new-car warranty runs for two years from the first delivery or first registration and requires that the services were carried out as specified. So tell us the date of first registration and whether there is a Garantie+.

Selling a VW ID.3, ID.4 or ID.7: what about the battery?

With an electric VW, almost everything revolves around it. Volkswagen gives a warranty on the high-voltage battery of eight years or 160’000 kilometers, whichever comes first. For the fully electric models, a usable energy content of less than 70 percent of the original value, measured by a service partner, counts as excessive loss. If it falls below this, the battery must be repaired so that, depending on age and mileage, at least 70 to 78 percent is reached again. This warranty also passes to the buyer. More on this in the guide Selling an electric car.

Golf GTI, GTE, R or R-Line: what do I need to state?

The exact designation, because different cars are behind it. R-Line is a trim level with a sporty look that is available with several engines. GTI, GTE and R are variants in their own right: the GTI as a sporty gasoline model, the GTE as a plug-in hybrid, the R as the most powerful model with 4MOTION all-wheel drive. Also note in the form whether the wheels, suspension or exhaust were modified afterwards and whether these modifications are entered in the vehicle registration document. If you still have the original parts, hand them over at the handover.
