Your BMW has to go: what you should know beforehand

You want to sell your BMW, but without a listing, test drives and haggling? Whether it’s an X1 coming off a lease, a 3 Series Touring with many motorway kilometers or an M model: the process is the same, the details are not. Three peculiarities of the brand in Switzerland belong in every request.

First, all-wheel drive: according to auto-schweiz, one in two new cars in Switzerland had all-wheel drive in 2025, and at BMW three X models, the X1, X3 and X5, topped the sales list. Second, the M: according to the importer, Switzerland has the highest share of M and M Performance vehicles in the world. Third, maintenance: new cars from official Swiss dealers come with BMW Service Plus, with free servicing up to 100’000 kilometers or ten years, and this benefit stays with the car when it changes registered keeper.

For you, this means: xDrive or sDrive, M model or M Sport package, bought in Switzerland or imported – such details decide which vehicles your BMW is compared with. The more precisely you state them, the more reliable the offer you get from us. It is based on what you write to us, on your pictures and on the vehicle registration document.

    Request a non-binding offer

Enter your vehicle details in our online form. Your advantage: with just a few details, you get a very accurate initial offer (in practice often accurate to within +/- 1’000 CHF), because we use real market data.

  2. 2

Send photos & vehicle registration document

Send us photos of your car and your vehicle registration document conveniently online. This allows a precise assessment without you losing time on appointments.

  3. 3

    Get a guaranteed offer

Based on your photos, you receive a firm, guaranteed offer – conveniently online, with no on-site viewing appointments. No renegotiation, 100% transparent.

  4. 4

    Vehicle handover & payment

On the day of the handover, you need the vehicle registration document, every key you have and the service booklet, plus the charging cables for a plug-in hybrid or BMW i. We check whether the model, equipment and condition match what you stated. If they do, the agreed amount goes to you by instant bank transfer, and we deregister the BMW at the road traffic office.

How you get your money

Right at handover, with no waiting.

Instant bank transfer Recommended

We transfer the purchase price during the handover itself. The money is usually in your account within seconds, secure and traceable.

Cash payment

For smaller amounts, for example for export vehicles, we can also pay in cash on request.

What we need to know about your BMW

Drive and engine. BMW calls its all-wheel drive xDrive; it appears in the model designation, for example X1 xDrive23d. Without it, an X model carries the abbreviation sDrive, like the X1 sDrive18i. An “e” after the number identifies plug-in hybrids such as the X1 xDrive30e, and the electric models are called BMW i, for example iX1 or i4. Of all BMWs on Swiss roads, 45.1 percent have a diesel engine, more than for any other of the 25 largest brands. With 22’006 vehicles, BMW also accounts for the most plug-in hybrids in the country (FSO 2025).

BMW Service Plus and warranty. According to the terms of BMW (Schweiz) AG, Service Plus covers maintenance for ten years or 100’000 kilometers, whichever comes first. The requirement is that the car was bought new from an official BMW dealer in Switzerland or Liechtenstein. The benefits are tied to the vehicle and transferable to subsequent buyers. The warranty is three years. For the high-voltage battery of new electric vehicles, BMW states a factory warranty of eight years or 160’000 kilometers.

Service and equipment. BMW services cars as needed rather than at fixed intervals (Condition Based Service). That makes the records all the more important: which service was done when, and by whom. For the equipment, “fully loaded” is not enough. State the line and packages, for example xLine or M Sport package, and any modifications that were not made at the factory.

Documents and details for the offer

  • Vehicle registration document with the exact model designation
  • Service booklet or service records, last service with mileage
  • Whether the BMW was bought new in Switzerland
  • Equipment list: M Sport package, xLine, optional extras
  • For plug-in hybrids and BMW i: battery certificate and charging cables
  • All keys, second set of wheels, known damage

Third place on the road, ahead in the premium segment: BMW in figures

The Swiss vehicle stock includes 359’370 BMWs (FSO, September 30, 2025). That is 7.4 percent of all passenger cars and third place behind VW and Mercedes-Benz. In Zug, the share is 10.6 percent, in Zurich 9.3 percent. In new registrations in 2025, BMW reached 20’466 vehicles and an 8.8 percent market share according to auto-schweiz; BMW Group Switzerland thus sees the brand at the top of the premium segment for the fourth time in a row.

The most frequently registered new models were the X1 (3’428), X3 (3’007), X5 (1’985), 1 Series (1’954) and 3 Series (1’734), plus the electric iX1 with 1’631 units. In 2026, a generational change began with the Neue Klasse; the iX3 was the first. A model change is one of the things that move the price of the predecessor; our guide to used car value shows what else does.

What determines the value of your car?

The most important factors in a vehicle valuation:

  • Make & model

Premium brands hold their value better

  • Mileage

    The lower, the more valuable

  • Features & engine

High-end features and a powerful engine increase the value

  • Technical condition

Body, engine and transmission are assessed individually

What BMW drivers want to know before selling

Does BMW Service Plus stay with the car when I sell it?

Yes. The terms of BMW (Schweiz) AG state that the benefits of BMW Service Plus are tied to the vehicle and remain transferable to subsequent buyers until the term or mileage limit is reached. The free servicing applies up to 100’000 kilometers or ten years and requires that the car was bought new from an official BMW dealer in Switzerland or Liechtenstein. So tell us when and where the BMW was first put on the road and what the odometer shows.

Does it make a difference whether my BMW has xDrive?

For the valuation, yes, because a model with xDrive and one with sDrive are different vehicles. According to auto-schweiz, 50.6 percent of all new passenger cars in Switzerland had all-wheel drive in 2025, and at BMW three X models topped the sales list. We buy both. What matters is that the information is correct: whether your BMW has xDrive is shown in the model designation in the vehicle registration document.

BMW i or plug-in hybrid: what do I need for the sale?

Proof of the battery’s condition. According to BMW Group Switzerland, a battery certificate for electrified used cars can be requested free of charge from any BMW and MINI partner; it shows the usable capacity of the high-voltage battery (state of health). For new BMW electric vehicles, the manufacturer gives a factory warranty on the high-voltage battery that runs for eight years or up to 160’000 kilometers. Also have the charging cables ready. The article Selling an electric car shows how else to prepare a car with a high-voltage battery.

My BMW is leased. Can I still sell it?

Yes, if the leasing company is paid off. Until then, it is the owner, whether the contract runs through BMW’s financing arm or through a bank. Ask it for the settlement amount; the remaining term and residual value are in your contract. How the settlement amount is offset against the purchase price: Sell a leased car.

Can I sell a BMW without a valid MFK?

Yes. You may sell a car whose MFK is due or overdue; however, you must disclose known defects. Tell us when your BMW was last inspected and what, if anything, was flagged, and we factor that into the offer. With us, you don’t need an inspection specially for the sale. You’ll find the legal situation and the consequences for the price here: Selling a car without MFK.

M model, M Performance or M Sport package: what do I state?

Exactly what your car is. You can recognize M models and M Performance models by the model designation in the vehicle registration document; the M Sport package is equipment and appears on the equipment list. Such cars are common here: according to BMW Group Switzerland, Switzerland has the highest share of M and M Performance vehicles in the world. Also mention performance upgrades, suspension modifications and wheels that were not fitted at the factory.
